ANNOUNCEMENTS
FOR CONGRESS
I hereby announce myself a candi
date for the Congress of the United
States from the 3rd District . of
South Carolina. Your vote will be
aippreciated.
R. L. (BUCK) GAMBLE
FOR SUPERVISOR
I hereby announce my candidacy
for the office of Supervisor and
pledge myself to abide the results of
the election and support the nomi
nees of the party.
S. W. SHEALY
, . FOR TREASURER
I hereby announce myself a candi
date for the office of Treasurer of
Newberry county and pledge myself
to abide the rules of the party and
to support the nominees thereof.
J. RAY DAWKINS
R. L. (BUCK) GAMBLE
Mr. Gamble has issued the follow
ing statements to the press:
“In announding as a candidate for
the Congress of the United States
from the Third district of South
Carolina, I am not unmindful of the
fact that this office carries a grave
responsibility to the people of the
Third District, to the State of South
Carolina, and to our nation at war
and in peace.
“I realize that the South faces
problems of deep significance in a
world of war and In the changing
postwar world to come. The solving
of these problems must not be hin-
dersd by political and personal in
terests but such interests must be
made subservient to the welfare of
the people.
“I pledge myself to stand by the
doctrine of State’s rights as we," of
this state have always advocated a
strong, healthy state solving its own
particular problems makes a strong
union.
“I make my pledge to the men
and women of our armed services
and their families to see that their
sacrifices in battle and at home have
not been in vain. I stand solidly
ibehind a program of veteran’s em
ployment that will see to it that
every man and woman returning
from service be given an opportun
ity to take a job that he or she may
resume an independent existence.
“From my experiences with the S.
C. Department of Labor I have
been privileged to observe the mag
nificent job done by labor and capti-
tal. Through their cooperation and
a maximum of effort, they have
made the highest production record
in the history of our country. I know
the problems of the man behind the
loom because I have worked with
him and beside him. His efforts to
gether with capital kept us from
defeat—his welfare should be our
concern.
“I advocate a higher price stand
ard for our farmers—he has pro
duced to the maximum, notwith
standing that his prices have been
held to a minimum. His power to
stick to the job of feeding many
nations demands that he receive his
just dues.
“My past experience has given me
the optportunity to see and sympa
thize with the many problems fac-
ing us today.
“Should I be elected to this high
office to which I aspire, you have
my assurance that as 1 have lived
and worked among you in the past 1
shall continue to live and work
among you in the. future. Should you
find my work has been worthwhile
and my qualifications satisfactory, 1
Would appreciate your support for
Congressman. from the Third Con
gressional District.”

JOHNSON-McCRACKIN COMPANY
Dear Mr. Editor.
I am today making my formal an
nouncement as a candidate for re-
election to Congres by filing my
pledge with the proper officials, de
claring I am a Democrat and pledg
ing myself to abide by the results
of the regular democratic primary
to be held on the last Tuesday in
July 1944. I have declared further
that I will not become a candidate
for any faction other than for the
regular democratic nomination and
that I will support the principles
and policies of the Democratic party
of South Carolina during the term
of office for which I may be elected.
I shall rely upon my public rec
ord and position on public questions
as justifications for my re-election
and, although I am convinced that
the problem of winning the war and
the peace to follow will overshadow
any contingency that might arise, I
shall attempt to discuss matters of
public interest as fully and com
pletely as circumstances will per
mit. Of course, there are some new
problems now commanding the at
tention of the people and their repre
sentatives in both state and national
affairs and, should I be elected, I
shall approach their solution with
all the ability and courage I am
able to command. There are also
problems of long standing public
import that must be met with the
same degree of courage and devo
tion demonstrated by my predeces
sors and their solution must be in
keeping with the traditions and poli
tical philosophy of our State. I
hope I can demonstrate to the peo
ple the qualifications they are en
titled to and will demand of their
representative in this crucial period
of oar nation’s history when our
body politic is threatened by foes
more subtle and insidious than those
ever marshalled on a battlefield.
BUTLER B. HARE.
