converting bags into smartly wear
able clothes if you keep a stock of
gay rick-rack braid and colorful
boU-fast threads and yams on hand
Just to give an extra flourish of
trimming and embroidery touches

no limit to the intriguing accents
that can be given to your chic bag
fashions, and at such a trifling cost,
too. Then too, you can inject real
drama into the bag-sewing program
by dyeing some of the cotton
squares in gay Mexican blues and
reds, yellows and purples. Make

dirndl skirts and dresses that are
worked out in striking color con
trast.
Best of all is the patriotic spirit

A new style technique that offers
endless possibilities is that of using
print for matching accessories and
as accent to the costume itself. We
used to think that a print blouse
was the whole story but now in or
der to make news a print blouse
must be teamed with something else
made of the same pattern. In this
instance a blouse is accompanied
by gloves of the same print. To fur
ther unify the costume the wool suit
has inserts at the shoulders of the
same silk and rayon polka dot that
makes the blouse end the gloves.
Taffeta Accessories
Set Off Basic Suit
If you have a basic suit—bolero
and cardigan types are smartest
this season—or a simple long-torso
black gown, you have achieved a
perfect foundation for the new taf
feta accessories that are so swag
ger. It’s the newest of fashion ges
tures to brighten your simple suits
and dresses with splurges of striking
plaid, check or stripe taffeta. You
can make an old garment look new
by adding these dramatic taffeta ac
cents. You can buy such intriguing
items as a weskit of Roman stripe,
the stripes made up horizontally
with tailored bows used instead
of button fastenings. Then there is
the modish sun-back sleeveless
blouse made of bold taffeta check

DUSTY CONCRETE FLOORS
very pretty costume accessories.
For the charming dress sketched
above to the left in the illustration,
the designer uses the bag fabric in
its natural color, highlighting it with
gaily colorful rick-rack used to trim
the low-cut U-neckline, the front
opening, the pockets and the
sleeves.
The attractive pinafore centered
at the top is made of unbleached
bags. You can either hem this apron
all around or pipe it with bright
colored cotton bias tape-binding
such as is available at all notion
counters for a few cents outlay. To
give it extra fillup, trim it with an
applique of flower motifs cut from
bright cotton print. You can buy
packaged assortments of cutout cot
ton figures and you’ll find them a
source of joy as they can be used
to trim in so many effective ways.
The dress to the right demon
strates convincingly what smart
fashions can be turned out of the
unbleached cotton bags. Gay colored
accents can be added, such as
contrast piping or multi-colored
rick-rack also the new green, red,
blue and yellow plastic buttons
which are being used in rotation.
Contrast bodice tops are excellent
style and this same model could be
made up in this way. Here’s where
the bags dyed in high colors can be
made to yield new glamour. Dye up
some of the bags you have on hand,
you’ll be surprised how effectively
they work into the scheme of things.

is preUy enough to set any little
girl’s heart all a’flutter. The young

How to Build Shower Stall
Question: I am planning to build
a shower in a space 32 inches wide
by 24 inches long and 7 feet high.
What type of waterproof material
can I use that will be economical,
yet good? Must the floor be of
cement, or can something else be
used instead?
Answer: The base or receptor of
the shower should be built of cement
with a lead pan under it to prevent
possible leakage to the floor below.
This work should be done by a com
petent concrete or tile man who
has had experience in this kind of
work. Or, you can get a precast
cement receptor. The latter would
be simple to install.
The walls can be of cement plas
ter over wire lath, or you can use
one of the prefinished dense fiber
wallboards. If the board is used,
the manufacturer’s directions should
be followed in making the joints
watertight. The smallest size show
er receptor measures 32 by 32
inches. Your 24-inch dimension is
rather "skimpy” for a shower stall.

Oil Stain on Wooden Chest
Question: I have a wooden chest
that I was preparing to paint, when
a large quantity of baby oil was
spilled on it. Although I wiped it
off with rags as soon as possible,
quite a bit of it penetrated into the
wood. Will the oil that remains in
the wood affect the enamel finish
that I am planning to apply on the
chest?
Answer: Sandpaper as much of
the surface as possible, and, if some
of the oil still remains that cannot
be removed, cover the stain with a
thick layer of a paste mixture made
by combining fuller’s earth or pow
dered whiting with a (preferably
noninflammable) spot removing
liquid. When dry, brush off the pow
der. An oil stain of that type would
affect the drying quality of the
enamel.

New Maple Floor
Question: What would you suggest
for a new maple floor to be laid in a
store where there will be considera
ble traffic and wear?
Answer: The floor can be given a
couple of soaking coats of hot lin
seed oil (raw). After allowing an
hour or so for soaking, wipe off the
excess and apply the next coat 24
hours later. Penetrating preserva
tive oil finishes are serviceable and
good-looking on maple.

Fireproofing Paper
Question: How can paper be made
fireproof?
Answer: Soak it in a solution of
eight ounces of boracic acid and ten
ounces of borax in one gallon of wa
ter. Float the paper on the liquid
until U is thoroughly saturated, and
then hang up to drip and dry.

Question: Some time ago you
wrote about a mixture for laying the
dust of a concrete cellar floor. Will
you please repeat?
Answer: You can lay the dust by
soaking the floor with a mixture of
one part water glass in four parts of
water. Make plenty of this mixture,
so that it can be poured on the
floor liberally, spread with a broom
and the floor allowed to soak it up.
At the end of some hours, wipe up
any puddles that may remain. You
may have to repeat the treatment
within a day or two. But if you
wish to paint the floor later on,
water glass should not be used. _ If
you should wish to paint, get a kind
of paint that is proof against the ef
fects of lime; for ordinary floor paint
will not last on a basement floor if
laid in the usual way.

Question: Our old-fashioned, high-
type of wood flush tank is leaking.
Could I use wood putty to mend it?
Answer: Caulking compound

Salad Magic
Salads are in season summer, win
ter, fall and spring, but in spring
you can really
have all the vari-
ety you want.
There are crisp
greens aplenty,
perhaps fresh
from your own
garden, and loads
of fresh fruits and
vegetables to complete the demands
of health and satisfy the appetite
for really fresh - from - the - garden
foods.
Everywhere you go you hear peo
ple saying, "A salad is just the
thing,” or “I want something green
and crisp.” It’s a sign of spring,
this desire to eat foods that fit with
the newness and freshness of spring.
A new idea for serving is to try a
salad buffet for it will save your
preparing individual salads for ev
eryone. Simply set salad ingredi
ents in bowls, park them on a tray
and whisk them into the dining room
for everyone to make up his own
combination. In the picture illus
trated above, you will notice the
bowl of salad dressing is surround
ed by crisp greens, and then there
are bowls of grapefruit sections with
avocado pears, strawberries, tears
or peaches and prunes stuffed with
cottage or cream cheese and nuts—
all the makings for salad for helping
yourself to any combination that ap
peals to you and your guests.
Salads can double for both the
salad and dessert course, or they
can be the mainstay of your lunch
eon for the club.
*Salad-Dessert Loaf.
(Serves 6)
1 envelope plain unflavored gelatin
H cup cold water
2 egg yolks
1 tablespoon melted butter or sub
stitute
14 eup mild vinegar
3 tablespoons vinegar
?4 teaspoon salt
>4 teaspoon paprika
Few grains cayenne, if desired
94 cup milk
2 tablespoons canned pineapple juice
1 cup prepared fruit
1 eup evaporated milic, whipped
Soften gelatin in cold water. Beat
egg yolks and salt. Add vinegar,
salt, butter, cay
enne, paprika and
pineapple juice
gradually. Whip
lightly. Add milk
and cook in top of
double boiler un
til of custard con
sistency, stirring

Your cues to a good salad are
few but important: ingredients
should be well chilled, attractive
ly arranged and served with the
proper dressing. Most fruit sal
ads take a whipped cream dress
ing or cooked dressing or mayon
naise flavored with fruit juices.
Occasionally, in the case of a
bland fruit or citrus fruit, a
french dressing is a must.
Seafoods are usually marinated
before mixed with other ingredi
ents. Marinate shrimps, crab-
meat, etc., in french dressing
even though you may use mayon
naise to hold the salad together.
The above trick may also be tried
with potato salad. It improves
flavor.

(Serves 6)
2 No. 1 cans shrimp
294 cups diced cooked potatoes
1 cup diced celery
94 cup chopped green pepper
94 cup french dressing
2 tablespoons lemon julco
94 teaspoon salt
94 eup mayonnaise
Salad greens
3 whole tomatoes, cut in wedges
3 green pepper rings
Ripe olives
Combine shrimp, potatoes, celery
and green pepper. Add french
dressing, lemon juice and salt. Chill.
Just before serving, moisten with
mayonnaise. Serve on chop plato
garnished with salad greens, toma
to wedges, green
pepper rings and
ripe olives.
A salad that’s
substantial and
really good is one
that combines fish
with mecaroni. A
subtle combination of seasonings
makes it just perfect eating:
Macaroni-Salmon Salad.
194 cups flaked salmon, tuna or
crabmeat
1 cup eooked macaroni
1 eup canned peas
94 cup diced celery
2 tablespoons minced plmiento
2 tablespoons chopped sweet plckl#
Salt and pepper to taste
Mayonnaise
Combine ingredients in order giv
en. Toss lightly with dressing and
serve, well chilled in lettuce cups.
The following salads are cool and
vitamin-rich, perfect foil for warmer
weather:
Raw Vegetable Salad.
2 cups raw carrots, grated
1 cup raw cabbage, shredded
94 cup raw celery, chopped
94 cup onions, diced
Cooked salad dressing
Mix together vegetables with just
enough dressing to hold together.
Lettuce Rolls.
1 head lettuce
1 cup cottage cheese
94 cup seedless raisins
94 cup chopped nuts
94 cup mayonnaise
Salt
Combine cheese, raisins and nuts.
Blend well with mayonnaise. Add
salt to taste. Use large lettuce
leaves and spread with cheese mix
ture. Roll as for jelly roll; chill
and serve.
Dressing Variations.
French Dressing: Crumble 94
pound roquefort cheese into 1 cup
french dressing. Serve over greens.
Lemon Cream Dressing: To 1 cup
chilled, evaporated cream, whipped,
add 3 tablespoons honey and 1 table
spoon lemon juice. Serve with Fruit
Salad.
Mayonnaise: Add 94 cup chill
sauce, 2 tablespoons pickle relish,
and 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped to
1 cup mayonnaise. This is good over
lettuce.
