Moscow, Dec. 18.—A yountf Russ
ian mechanic, who admitted betraying
his country, testified at Russias first
,war criminal trial that he aided the
Germans in slaughtering 60 children
between tht ages of 6 and 12, the
Moscow press reported today, while
a German defendant told a packed
shuddering coutr room how the Nazis
systematically killed thousands of
innocent Rusians by gas, machine-
guns and torture.
Mikhail Petrobich Bulanov, 26,
Russian chauffeur for the Gestapo,
testified at the trial at Kharkov that
the sick and starving children were
placed in a truck and tol dthey were
being taken to Stalingrad to visit
relatives, but that later the Gestapo
mowed them down with automatic
guns as the children cried, “Daddy,
don’t kill us, we want to live.’
Russian children commonly address
strangers as daddy.

In addition to Bulanov, three Ger
mans are on trial following the
pledge of the Soviet Union, the Unit
ed States and Great Britian that war
criminals would be brought to jus
tice at the scenes of their crimes and
tried under local law.
Moscow newspapers devoted much
space to the trial and gave these
highlights from the testimony:
A German police corporal, Rein
hardt Ratzlaw, 36, under examina
tion by Maj. Gen. A. N. Maisanikov,
of the 4th Ukrainian military tribun
al. who is presiding over the trial,
testified in detail of how he partici
pated in the beating and torture of
Russians, such as pulling hair ou of
their beards, and sticking pins into
women. He also testified that - he
helped operate a death automobile
where Russians were put to death
from carbon monoxide gas.
Ratzlaw estimated that about 5,-
000 were killed in this fashion and
that the to.al killed in Kharkov and
Kharkov province was about 30,000
He further estimated that the Ger
mans had executed about 5,000 to
8,000 persons at Zhitomir, about 35,-
at Kiev and about 4,000 at Lubni
during their occupation of these
cities.
The Nazi corporal 'told the court that
he felt responsible for the deaths of
these people “in the sense that I car-
ritd out the ordersof my chiefs.”
Another defendant, Hans Ritz, a
storm trooper commander, testified
that he helped falsify documents
which led to the execution of hund
reds of innocent Russians and him
self took a gun and fired into the
ranks of screaming people “to fulfill
my orders.”
“Otherwise,” he added “I would
have been tried myself.”
The fourth defendant, Capt. Wil
liam Langheld, 52, of the Gestapo,
testified that the German govern-
hent had issued orders for the SS
exitermination of innocent Russians
and declared that he himself had
killed “about 100.”
Langheld said a mother was
beaten to death and to silence the
wailing and screaming of her child
a corporal killed it.
Following .he direct examination
of four defendants the court ordered
the questioning of witnesses to start.
Red army gunners guarded the
prisoners in the packed courtroom.
The spectators shuddered as the
four men told in lurid detail their
part in the slaying of Russian men,
women and children.
The goal of the Second War
Loan drive is 13 billion dol-
lars. That is just about on*
fifth of the estimated increase
of the Public Debt for the fis
cal year of 1943.

Junk something every day. Junk
your fears, junk your worries, junk
your anxieties, junk your Jealousies,
envies and hatreds. Whatever inter
feres with your getting up and got-
ing on in the world—junk itl Every
night before you go to sleep, put in
your junk heap all your disappoint
ments, all your grudges, your 're
vengeful feelings, your malice. Junk
everything that is hindering you
from becoming a big, strong, fine,
character. The great trouble with
most of us is that we have not any
junk heap of this sort. We put all
our mental enemies, all our handi
caps, our disapointments, our losses,
our misfortunes, ou rtroubles, wor
ries, and trials along with us. That
eats up more than fifty per cent of
our vitality and energy, so that we
have only the smaller amount left
for the great achievements of mak
ing life a success.—Selected

The Navy says you can’t send
Christmas packages weighing more
than 5 pounds overseas. Well,
that’s too bad about the Navy—
'cause I’m sending you the front
door for Christmas! There's noth
ing they can do to stop me!
Oh, Jimmy, it's a beautiful blue
door—or maybe it's green. I hope
you like it. I hope I did the
right thing.
I walked miles and miles through
stores. And nothing was half nice
enough for a new husband. And
besides, I thought, Jimmy won't
want to lug some silly gadget all
over the Atlantic ocean. .
wanted to give you. It's more them
a Christmas present, it's a coming
home present. .. jj
I don't know if a $25 War Bond
will buy us a whole front door ^
(you’re the financial brains of
this family). But it'll buy us the
start of one, won't it?
So Merry Christmas, darling! I'm
holding on to the War Bond 'cause
it's too precious to go chasing /
around the world after you. Bu\. ^
please, on Christmas Eve, open the
door . . . and walk in . . . and /
dream awhile. - -

Even if you haven’t a son
or a brother or a husband
who is fighting, there’s a
Christmas present—and a
coming home present—you
can give all our boys this year.

tsar my hair out—I knew what I
