FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1943 “MAKE IT DO” Down Memory Lone 20 YEARS AGO Newberry has grown a park almost overnight, it seems. We refer to Memorial park, which is now a thing of beauty, with its even walks, gree n grass and shrubbery. Of course this is just the ■beginning of the memorial to those who fought in the World war. A central space has been left for the memorial proper—a fountain, possibly, which would certainly be attractive, or a monument of some other kind. The following was clipped from an account of the Washington conven tion in The State of Sunday: “In the report of the president general of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Mrs. Livingston Rowe Schuyler, attention was called to The Confederate Veteran as a means of communication between the federal U. D. C. and divisions, in the periods, between conventions. The Mrs. R. D. Wright, the U. D. C. edi tor, was especially commended. She mentioned, too, that the ‘insperation drawn from speaking to 1,500 young women at Winthrop college, Rock Hill, would be of lasting benefit to the work’.” Mr. Aithur Eargle has been engag ed to sell holiday articles from Wm. Johnson and Son’s hardware store during the Christmas season. Lieutenant Vermon Wheeler of the U. S. Navy, accompanied by Mrs. Wheeler, will sp^nd next week in Newberry with Mrs. Wheeler’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Wheeler, and at Prosperity with Mr. Wheeler’s parents, Mr. andMrs. J. M. Wheeler. Miss Estelle Whitaker, a Lander college student, spent the Thanks giving holidays in the city with her narents, Anderman and Mrs. H. D. Whitaker. Cotton was paying around 34 ee-ts on the local market , Monday, with seed bringing 73 1-2 cents. P wder putfs will toe in demand this week. The druf stores have some nice ones on band. Prof. J. C.
