IDIOT’S DELIGHT
While North Carolina isn’t under
the no-pleasure driving regulation,
it could easily qualify if there were
enough conscience to go around.
There’s a big shortage of conscience.
War hardens and Shrivels the sup
ply.
But how can people who practice
it call it pleasure driving? There
can't be much pleasure in burning
up gasoline for fun when it is so
hadly needed by the armed forces
and essential industries. What does
a pleasure driver think about as he
watches his gasoline gauge go
down? Where’s the fun? Driving
aimlessly around, going nowhere
and back to nothing—the pleasure
is al! Hitler’s.
A better term would be moron-
driving or idiot’s delight.—Charlotte
Observer.

HOODLUMS AND SAILORS FIGHT
IN LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles, June 8—-Fighting be
tween zoot-suited -hoodlums and Navy
personnel broke out again late today
in the Skidrow area. One sailor was
stabbed and three other navy men
were badly beaten.
A gang of hoodlums attacked four
sailors who had entered the Skid-
row area wihich military officials
had declared out of bounds early
today after a series of fights.
Seaman Donald Jackson, 20, suf
fered a five inch knife wound. He
was taken to a hospital with his
three companions.
The carload of aoot-suited ma
rauders sped out of the Mexican and
negro section into the main street
section of shooting galleries, bars,
cheap cafes and Cheaper hotels where
the sailors and hoodlums bad battled
the last two nights.
The open war between the re-
venge-seekng Navy and the gangs
of juvenile thugs who had attacked
lone sailors with knives and clubs
brought rapid developments today.
Military officials declared the
area out of bounds for -soldiers, sail
ors and marines.
City officials, who had been con
tent to let the irate sailors clean
up a condition which had perplexed
them for several months admitted
that the rioting and gang warfare
was “getting out of bounds.”
Skidrow was strip row for a few
hours before the miltary police
clamped down, but the action wasn’t
in burlesque houses—it was on the
streets. Sailors were reducing zoot
suite to birthday suits for the gang
of juveniles who got too big for
ther pegged pants.
-Sixty members of various teen-
aged gangs were in jail after police
found them naked and Shivering
on street corners where they had
been left by the sailors who had
declared open season on any char
acter in a long coat, wide brimmed
bat and- ankledvogging trousers.
Six of the hoodlums who tried to
fight 'back were in -hospitals tonight.
The gangs, composed mostly of
Mexicans between the ages of 14
and 25, who turned from their
back-alley -snipe-shooting activities
to forays in rape, robbery, mahem
and murder, were held responsible
by police for at least three slayings.
Civilian authorities had tried un
successfully to curb the crime wave.
Three Mexicans, none older than
19, are -serving life sentences for
the fatal beating of Andrew Diaz,
21. Five others are serving from
five years to life.
The youths were divided into
several warring gangs, who were a t-
first content to fight among them
selves. Then all apparently declar
ed war on the fun-seeking sailors
who patronized the main street area.
Three Navy wives also were attack
ed.

WE KNOW OUR BUSINESS
NEW USE FOR CHIPS
The poker chip, that small but in
teresting little gadget that for years
has been teaching elementary eco
nomics to the unwary, now has a
war job. An instructor at a marine
cor ps base on ; the west coast uses
them as markers on war maps to
show troop positions. “We'll see your-
two platoons there, sergeant, and
raise you one anti-aircraft battery.”
War, like life is just a game in a
way.—Charleston News and Courier.
There is no surer way of wasting
time today than in listening to and
repeating the Stale old propaganda
formulas: how Britain lures Amer
ica into war and then proceeds to
fight it to the last American. We
have been in two wars against Ger
many because twice Germany has
threatened our vital interests and
our very existence. We are not
Britain’s dupes and we are not her
hired gunmen. We are Americans
engaged in defending American des
tiny. This is the point from which
to Start out in fighting the war and
planning for after the war.—New
York Times.
AS TRUE TODAY
Said George Washington as we
fought for our liberty:
“It is a noble cause that we are
engaged in; it is the cause of virtue
and mankind. Let us, therefore, rely
upon the goodness of the cause and
the aid of the SupreW Being, in
whose hand victory is, to encourage
us to great and noble action.”
Which is just as applicable today,
as we fight to retain the liber y
which was won for us by Washing
ton and his men.—-The State.
