MATTRESS PLAN EXPLAINED
County Agent P. B. Ezell advises
that a Cotton Mattress Plan is now
under way in Newberry County, which
is designed to help the nation-wide
effort to reduce the big surplus of
cotton now on hand and at the same
time improve living conditions of
farm families that are in need of
cotton products.
The cotton mattress plan is an
important step in this direction ac
cording to County Agent P. B. Ezell
as it aims to put a cotton product
into the homes of families that can
not buy it and thus to consume some
cotton that would not otherwise be
consumed. Mr. Ezell points out
that the cotton plan now available
to producers of this county is a
simple one.
1. The Government makes surplus
cotton available.
2. A rural family is eligible for
free cotton and ticking for one mat
tress if the family income is less
than $400.00 per year when one-half
is derived from the farm.
3. The cotton is made available by
the county Triple A committee, which
also certifies the families entitled to
the mattresses.
4. Through community organiza
tion workrooms will be provided so
that the needful families may make
their own mattresses under trained
supervisors.
5. Extension Service agents will
provide proper instruction and sup
ervision in mattress making.
6. Applications for mattresses must
be taken on a standard form and filed
with the Home Demonstration Agent.
7. Each applicant must be identi
fied by a 1940 farm serial number as
operator, share cropper or wage hand.

of Reedy River \ssociation held at
Bush River church, Rev. J. R. Mc
Kittrick gave a forceful and inform
ing address on “Extra Window
Panes” (the theme for the whole
program was Windows), laying spe
cial emphasis on why we should vote
against the liquor traffic. Rev. C. M.
Johnson then offered the following
resolution which was unanimously
adopted by rising vote:
Resolved, That the Reedy River As
sociation W. M. U., declare itself
heartily in sympathy and effort with
the county organization for temper
ance and law enformecent.
An offering for the cause was

last week-end with Miss Betty Gen
try in Spartanburg.
On Saturday afternoon. Miss Gen
try entertained with four tables of
bridge and on Saturday night with a
dinner party in honor of Miss Mc
Alpin.

Mi-s. Hugh Foster, who is spending
several months in Newberry, was
hostess at a lovely dinner party
Tuesday night at the home of Mrs.
J. H. West on Calhoun street hon
oring Mr. and Mrs. C. C. West, of
St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. and Mrs.
West were married April 20, and are
spending part of their honeymoon
here.
Those present at the dinner party
from out of town were Mrs. Alice
Yates and son, Wilson, of Winns-
boro, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy West of
Spartanburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Wil
bur Epps and family of the county.
At eight o’clock, twenty two guests
were invited into the dining room
where a five course dinner was serv
ed. A ereen and white color scheme
was predominant, with snowballs tnd
fern forming the floral setting. The
bride’s place was marked with a
bouquet of valley lilies and fern.
Mrs. J. H. West honored this Con
nie with a luncheon Wednesday at
her home. Those present at this lun
cheon were Mr. and Mrs. C. C. West
Mr and Mrs. Hugh Foster, Dr. and
Mrs. F. O Lamoreux of Batesburg,
Mrs I. H. Hunt, Miss Iva Mae Prit
chard. and Mr. Eugene Parker.
A three course luncheon was serv
ed at noon.
Mrs. Clem Youmans gave a dinner
party Wednesday night for the im
mediate West family, honoring Mr.
and Mrs. C. C. West. Twelve mem
bers of the family were present.
The living room of Mrs. Youman’s
home on Glenn street was ’ lovely
with decorations of tulips and iris.
The guests were invited into the
dining room at eight o’clock. On
the center of the table was a bowl
of yellow tulips and double iris.
Among the flowers were placed light
ed tapers of pastel shades.
A three course dinner was served.
Mrs. H. K. Boyd left today (Thurs
day) for Asheville, N. C., where sho
will spent several days with her sis
ter, Mrs. W. E. Sawyer and Dr.
Sawyer.
Mrs. George Reid of Ninety-Six
returned to her home Sunday after
spending a week with her sister, Mrs.
E. O. Hentz on College street.
