TO HOLD STUDENT NURSE
EXAMINATION
The United States Civil Service
Commission has announced an open
competit’ve examination to secure
student nurses for employment at
the St. Elizabeths Hospital (Federal
Institution for Treatment of Mental
Disorders), Department of the In
terior, Washington, D. C.. not later
than April 29 if received from States
east of Colorado, and not later than
May 2, 1940, if received from Colo
rado and States westward.
'Hie hospital offers a 3-year train
ing course for the student nurses,
and pays them a salary of $288 a
year with quarters, subsistence,
laundry, and medical attention.
Those who satisfactorily complete
the training course and receive cer
tificates of graduation will be eligi
ble for promotion to positions on the
nursing staff, if vacancies are avail
able.

from Secretary of the U. S. Civil
Service Board of Examiners at the
post office in this city, or from the
Secretary of the U. S. Civil Service
Board of Examiners at any first- or
second-class post office.
NOTICE OF JURY DRAWING
The fifth and last meeting of the
Newberry County Education Asso
ciation for 1939-40 will be ’held in
the Newberry high school auditorium
Thursday afternoon.
The departmental meetings will be
held at 3:00 at which time new offi
cers for all departments for the en
suing year will be elected.
At the general meting at 4:00
the address will be made by Dr. J.
W. Speake, President of Lander Col
lege, Greenwood.

EXPLAINS A FEW THINGS
Because public officials failed to
pay their personal electric bills, owed
to the municipal plant, an Ohio town
finds itself in serious financial trouble.
And a Pennsylvania village paid
$35,000 for a paving job that should
have cost $6,000.
In another community a mayor sold
a $50 radio set to a contractor for
$500 the day before paving contracts
were let.
This sort of shenanigans explains
why many American communities
don’t get their money’s worth for
the $4,500,000,000 they spent last
year for government, says the Nat
ional Consumers Tax Commission,
whose study groups in 5,000 commun
ities are seeking lower taxes thru
more efficient and economical govern
ment.
These cases were among the more
glaring of preliminary samples turn
ed up by NCTC women in surveying
for “economy begins at home” drives.
There will be a one per cent. (Iper
cent) discount on general County
Taxes through November 30, 1939.
On and after January 1, 1940, the
Penalties prescribed by law will be
imposed on unpaid Taxes.
You are requested to call for your
taxes by School Districts in which
property is located. The Treasurer
is not responsible for unpaid taxes
not called for by districts.
Those who had their dogs vacci
nated for rabies during the fiscal
year ending June 30, 1939, by one
authorized by law, and expect to be
exempted from dog tax will please
bring their certificate of vaccina-
ation when appearing to pay taxes.

CELLS ARE WORK ROOMS FOR
BRITISH WAR STAFF
LONDON, Eng.—Scores of the war
office staff have gone to prison.
There’s been no scandal attached to
the move, but it’s a fact just the
same.
All regular inmates of one of Bri
tain’s most famous old prisons were
evacuated soon after war was declar
ed, and their cells now are being oc
cupied by officers, using the cells as
offices.
Cells which had been used for old
and infirm prisoners are the most
eagerly sought, for they are well
equipped with modern heating appar
atus.

British Flying Officer Has
Two Artificial Legs
LONDON, Eng.—Douglas R. S.
Bader has two artificial legs, and yet
is a first-class pilot of the R. A. F.
somewhere in England, with the title
of flying officer.
Bader joined the RAF eight years
ago and was one of England’s most
promising pilots, then one day he
crashed and lost both legs. He had
two artificial legs fitted and found
that he could fly as well as ever with
them. So he applied to the air min
istry to rejoin the RAF, but it was
peacetime, he was rejected.
But Bader was not the type that
gives up easily, so went on flying on
his own in all kinds of machines, and
when war broke out, was accepted
once again by the air ministry.
NEW CITY DIRECTORY OUT
Newberry’s new city directory is
now in the hands of subscribers.
The new volume shows that the ac
tual population count in the City of
Friendly Folks is 10,049 people, an
increase over the 1937 figure of
nearly 6 per cent. The United States
Census of 1930 is 7,298; nearly
three thousand less than the new
figure. It is expected that the 1940
U. S. Census here will show a like
increase in population.
