In this book of practical reflections
the author, minister of Christ Church,
Methodist Episcopal, New York City,
also pastor of the “Radio Pulpit"
which was formerly conducted by Dr.
Oadman, discusses “A Trace with
Times,” “Today Is Ours”, “Live for
Tomorrow”, “Life’s Growing Edge”,
and other such topics. Some of these
essays were given as the Henry Mar
tin Loud lectures at the University
of Michigan under the auspices of the
First Methodist Church of Ann Ar
bor. The book is a rewarding study
of ethical and religious essays that
are both practical dnd philosophical,
dealing in both timely issues and et
ernal values with force and clarity.
One outstanding feature of all the
writings of Dr. Sockman is his use
of “Sockmanic” epigrams as well as
giving those of other writers a new
twist. “If we wculd live for tomor
row, we must learn the truly provi
dent life,” p. 25. “Look at the edges
of your owe life,” p. 41. “The Christ
channels change into progress,” p.
49. “The very interruptions of life’s
regularity can serve to show us the
continuity of the current,” p. 67.
“Others have nursed their loved ones
into a softening selfishness,” p. 97.
“Liberty is the life-blood of the
American way,” p. 119. No less in
teresting is the last chapiter of the
book where the author is giving his
reasons for believing in a life beyond
the grave, because “I be’ 1 .ve in the
integrity of the human personality,”
because “I believe in the integrity of
this universe, even where I cannot
see,” because “I believe in the integ
rity of Jesus of Nazareth," and be
cause “I trust the integrity of my
own intimations of immorality.”
“Thus the good life passes the last
frontier,” p. 139. Those who believe
in the good life will be interested
in this book.

Funny folks, the American sport
public—they are even worse than
Bamum said they were.
Friday night they will pay good
money to see Joe Louis slap a guy
named Paycheck around and Saturday
say all over again there isn’t any one
now capable of stopping Jolting Joe.
Joe Louis is as far ahead of the pug
ilist as the Yanks are of baseball, but
time will catch. Joe, and I th: k two

a matter of getting more dough to
live on.
The Greatest Outfield
They tell you of this player or
that, but when they tell of a player
with only a couple years how can
anyone compare him with the boys
who for years were top notchers.
I’ve read of this outfield and that
but give me this one today in their
prime and you could have the rest
a dime a dozen for several seasons
yet and I have seen the great Joe Di
Maggio in action along with some of
the other greats.

I know you will say Joe Jackson,
well he might have been the greatest
natural hitter the game ever saw but
he lacked other things.

compare four years with twenty and
he hasn’t played that many yet.
A1 Simmons and a host of others

still Cobb, Speaker and Ruth.

One of the stock alibis for our en
ormous federal debt is that much of
the money has gone to create a val
