This world - famous “Santa Claus editorial” printed be low, was an answer to the following letter: Dear Editor: I am eight years old. Some of my little 'friends say there is no Santa Claus. Please tell me the truth. —Virginia O’Hanlon. “Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skectcisms of a skeptical age. They do not believe, except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect in intellect, as com pared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth. “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love i and generosity and devotion exist. | and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginia’s. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make toler able this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be ex tinguished. Not to believe in a Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in faries! You might get your papa to hire men to watch all the chimneys on Christmas. Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees San ta Claus. The most ’-eal things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. You tear apart a baby’s rattle and see what makes the noine inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest men, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push a- side that curtain and view the super nal beauty beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. NEELY HOSTESS Mrs. A. T. Neely was cordial host ess at a rook party Thursday morn ing at her Calhoun street home. Three tables were arranged for players in the living room which was brightly decorated in a Christ mas motif. After cards were laid aside the hostess served a two course turkey dinner. Joining the guests for lunch were Mrs. C. A. Calcote, Mrs. R. W. Culbertson, Mrs. P. G. Elle- sor, and Mrs.J.C. Davis. Playing rook were Mrs. W. R. Reid, Mrs. George Johnstone, Miss Frances Doughtery, Mrs. D. W. A. Neville, Mrs. Walter Hunt, Miss Fannie McCaughrin, Mrs. Warren Abrams, Mrs. Jack Chappells, Mrs. Wilton Todd, Mrs. Frank Wilson, Miss Minnie Gist, and Mrs. Hugh Senn. •»»»Xh>XKh-XkX>OOC“XKn>Xk>Xh>X>0«>»X»»»X->X>-Xk>X>OC CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER At the congregational meeting held last Sunday Mr B. V. Chapman and Mr. Harry H. Hedgepath were elect ed to membership on the church coun cil for a period of three years. Others recently elected for the same period of time are Mr. A. J. Bowers, Jr., Mr. J. W. Earhardt, Jr., and Dr. Er- land Nelson. These will assume office on January first. The Sunday school special Christ mas program will be rendered next Sunday evening at 6:00 in the church. Mrs. Drayton L. Nance is directing the preparation for the program. On Christmas Day there will be a special congregational Christmas ser vice, beginning at 10:00. On next Sunday evening at 9«30 the Luther League will sponsor a special service in which Christmas carols will be featured. Immediately after the service the Leaguers will sing for shut-ins of the community. CROSLAND ADDED TO SCE STAFF Dan Crosland, for nearly 10 years connected with the Greenville News- Piedmont company and Radio station WFBC, has been added to the execu tive staff of the South Carolina Edu cation Association to handle public relations and advertising in the as sociation’s magazine and newspaper. Crosland is a graduate of Furman University. He taught in the public schools of the state for four years after graduation. He then worked as a reporter for the Greenville News for about four vears. Crosland af terward joined C e staff of the Green ville News radio station, WFBC, as a news broadcaster. In recent months he has been both a news commenta tor and a member of WFBC’s sales personnel. His duties with the association will include the writing and issuing of statewide releases on association ac tivities, the writing and editing of the association newspaper. South Carolina Teacher, and the handling of advertisements for the paper and the magazine. South Carolina Education, and other public relations activities.
