Treat For Lice and .Mites
Unless the birds have been treated
for lice and the roosting quarters for
mites within six, months, they are al- |
most certain to be infested with
these harmful parasites.
Lice stay on the birds at all times
and to destroy them the birds should
be treated with sodium fluoride dust
or by applying a nicotine sulphate
base compound to 'the perches one
hour before the birds go to roost,
making sure that all the birds get on
the perches and that another appli-
[ cation is made within 10 days to
j destroy the lice from the eggs that
j have hatched during this period.
Also, nicotine sulphate compounds
have been found to give excellent re
sults by individual treatment when
one application is made from a small
oil, can, placing a drop in the fine
i feathers on the fluff, a drop in the
feathers under each wing, anfl a drop
in the feathers on the back of the
neck.
Thorough cleaning of the house and
spraying with equal parts of kero
sene and used motor oil or some other
effective method is necessary to get
the mites since the mites stay in the
house in the daytime, hiding in con
cealed places, and infest the birds
mostly at night.
Grow Green Feed
Green feed supplies vitamins A
and G and for this reason laying
hens should be allowed to range on
it. Both of these vitamins are nec
essary to get the maximum egg pro
duction and hatchability. Vitamin A
is necessary also to pr|vent an eye
trouble similar to roup.
Green feed has some advantages
other than nutritional, in that it tends
to keep the birds satisfied and prob
ably helps to prevent feather pulling
and cannibalism. For this reason the
birds should have access to a green
range at all times. This can be sup
plied by the use of a double yarding
system, which not only supplies an
abundance of green feed but aids in
combating diseases and parasites.
Oats make a good winter grazing
crop. They should be seeded at the
rate of five bushels per acre. This
makes a dense sod which will afford
grazing fc>r a flock of hens much
longer than when lighter seedings
are made.
If the yards used for hens to range
are limited or if there is any ques
tion about not having ample green
feed for the hens at all times, les-
padeza meal or alfalfa leaf meal
should be added to the mash. This
can be added at the rate of five to
10 pounds per 10 pounds of mash, and
may be substituted for com meal or
wheat middlings. It will not mater
ially increase the cost of the mash
and it will supply the feed factors
which are normally supplied in green
feed.

PRE-SCHOOL GROUP
MOTHERS HOLD SESSION
The pre-school group of the Moth
er’s club met Friday afternoon at the
attractive new home of Mrs. George
Martin with Mrs. Leon Nichols, as
sociate hostess. Mrs. Fitzgerald
Rutherford was presiding.
The program consisted of a talk on
i “Inheritance” made by Mrs. J. W.
j Martin. Mrs. Steve Griffith discuss-
| ed “Youthful Emotions” and Mrs.
Thomas Folk addressed the club mem
bers on “Common Behavior.”
Following the program the hostess
served a sweet course. The home of
the meeting was decorated with pink
gladioli for the occasion.
MOLLOHON GIRL SCOUTING
Well, here I am again just roving
around with the Mollohon Girl
Scouts who held their regular meetini
Monday evening at the club house.
Just another one of those s*rictly
business meetings which put your
reporter on a spot to have something
to write about which would interest
you, my readers, if I have any.
But for the actual meeting and I
ask what do you care about who gets
this dish or that pan for the fair and
our booth and who sold how many
tickets for Saturday night’s perform
ance of the Ballentine Pigs but I
can say that our plans for next sum
mer depends upon the fair mostly
and I ask your cooperation in this
and visit us “wantcha”? But I don’t
have to ask that because I know you
will cause you haven’t let us down
yet in anything we have undertaken.
Here is something else—a towns
man was asked to buy a ticket for
Saturday night by one of our Scouts
whom I happened to be with and
when she told him what it was for
he quickly answered, “Sure, I will
buy one. I am glad to help you
scouts in any way I can.” You just
don’t know how happy that made us
feel. *
Now for some ramblings among
the scouts. Believe you me, I think
“Sister Willis” has given up singing
and is taking up art. Just before she
was told to take her seat Monday
night she was at the blackboard
drawing away on a picture which she
called Hitler. Some picture, I say . .
So, so for that and now to welcome
our new member—Ruth Shealy—who
has taken the place of Muriel Mayo
who recently moved to Union. Let me
warn all those Scout lassies to be
on the dot Friday night at six o’clock
instead of our regular meeting Mon
day night for there is a hundred and
one things to get done. So there
won’t be any Scout news next week
. It’s stopping time with me now
so I will say singing the taps and
the usual good-night closed the meet
ing.
