THE SUIT
Death Claims County Treasurer, John Caldwell Brooks
J. C. Brooks, county treasurer,
died in a Columbia hospital Saturday
about midday, following an operation
for removal of a kidney about a week
previously. Mr. Brooks ■ was in his
49th year and so far as the public
knew was in the best of health. He
went about hia duties at the court
house in his usual manner until a day
or so before entering the hospital.
He had served as treasurer less than
two years, having taken over the of
fice July 1st, 1937.
Mr. Brooks was a graduate of New
berry college and followed the teach
ing profession for many years. He
served aa head of the schools at Whit
mire, Pomaria, St. Philips, Brunson,
and perhaps other places. He was
head of the Salley schools when
nominated treasurer in the summer
primaries of 1936 and taught there
during the 1936-37 session, taking
up his work at the court house in July
of 1937 following the close of the
school term.
Mr. Brooks was a son of the late
John and Etta Dominick Brooks and I
was bom and raised in the county.
He was a member of the Lutheran
church of the Redeemer.
Funeral services were conducted at
the home at the comer of Glenn and
Johnstone streets, by Rev. E. Bryan
Keisler assisted by Rev. George E.
Meetze of Prosperity. Burial follow
ed in the Prosperity town cemetery
when hundreds gathered to pay last
tribute.
Surviving members of his immedi
ate family are his widow, the former
Jennie Ruth Counts; a son, J. C., Jr.;
and a daughter, Marcelle. One bro
ther, Ernest A. Brooks, and a sister,
Mrs. S. A. Quattlebaum, also survive.
Active pallbearers were Carol
Derrick, Paul Haile, Charlie Lomi-
nick, Johnnie B. Livingston, Eugene
Stockman, D. C. K. Wheeler, Frank
Lominack, and Ernest Kinprd.
Serving as honorary pallbearers
were Dr. J. E. Stokes, E. S. Blease,
Keister Willingham, and the court
house officials including H. K. Boyd,
T. M. Fellers, J. C. Neel, Hub
Quattlebaum, Frank Sanders, Claude
Sanders, Neal Workman, H. H. Ruff,
S. W. Shealy, C. E. Hendrix, and
P. N. Abrams.

married Monday afternoon at six
o’clock at the Lutheran Church of
the Redeemer, »be Rev. E. B. Keis
ler officiating.
Mrs. Lindsey is the attractive
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. S.
Davis of this city. Mr. Lindsey is
employed at the local Maxwell and
Quinn store.
Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey are making
their home on Boundary street.

Tuesday afternoon Mrs. Gordon N.
Clarkson and Mrs. Henry Lominack
entertained at a lovely party at the
home of the former on Mayer ave
nue honoring Miss Julia Eleazer
whose marriage to Jack Chappells
takes place next month.
Arrangements of mixed flowers
decorated the rooms where six
tables were placed for the guests to
play contract bridge. Miss Eleazer’s
place was designated by a large bou
quet of pink radiance roses.
The high and second high score
prizes awarded at the games went
to Mrs. P. J. Stokes and Mrs. Tbeo
Albrecht, respectively. Mrs. Jesse
Dickert was bingo prize winner. The
honor guest was presented a trousi-
seau gift.
The hostesses served block cream,
individual cakes, and mints in pas
tel shades.
FORTNIGHTLY CLUB MEETS

Mrs. H. M. Bryson’s home on
Harrington street was the scene of
meeting of the Fortnightly club
members at their monthly social
gathering Tuesday afternoon. Extra
guests of the club included Mrs. R.
W. Kirkland and Mrs. A. J. Bowers
Jr.
A variety of spring flowers was
used in the rooms where three tables
were arranged for the guests to play
rook.
Later in the afternoon Mrs. Bry
son served a chicken salad plate
and coffee at the tables.
