JUST IN CASE
Since it seems others had public
ly expressed views similar to that
contained in our article “Have We
Been Kidded?” it might be well to
explain that our inspiration came as
a direct result of the ungrounded
claims of the Chamber of Commerce
and not from any member of the
Civic League. We have had no con
versation with any member of the
league in several weeks, prior to the
appearance of the article. Subse
quently however, jtwo members of
the league called to express their
approval; one to the effect that we
said only half of what we should
have said on the matter.
This newspaper is jealous for the
good name of the league. We know
how it has striven, begged and
worked to beautify the city, and
we resent such a do-nothing outfit
as the Chamber of Commerce at
tempting to leave the impression that
it in some way had a part in the good
work of the league.
The City of Newberry pours $400
a year into this rat hole and gets in
return exactly nothing. The Civic
League could take that $400 and do
wonders with it: in fact as we have
stated before, the entire Chamber of
Commerce should be turned over to
the Civic League, minus certain of
the personnel of course!
IS THE DELEGATION “TIGHT?”
The writer of these lines cam
paigned most ardently in ’32 for a
reduction of the county adminis
trative costa. A reduction, a very
drastic one, was made. Officers re
ceiving $3,300 and upward were
slashed to $2,400 and $2,700. For
the most part they took it o*n the
chin, realizing that times were hard
and trusting to the fairness of the
future delegations to take care of
them when costs began to rise.
Living costs were low in 1932-33-
and ‘34. Bacon was selling at 4c per
pound and a good white shirt could
be bought for half a dollar. Officers
got along fairly well on what was
left after the cut. Now, however,
prices are sky high and some officers
are barely getting by.
Two hundred dollars per month
sounds like a lot of money and or
dinarily it is not bad pay. However
$200 to one engaged in private in
dustry and $200 to a county officer
is not one and the same. Out of his
$200, or $225 a month most of the
county officers are forced to spend
$400 to $600 each year for office
help. If they want to stay in office
they must make a campaign every
two years, even if they hold four-
year offices; they must contribute to
every cause that comes along; some
one’s grand mammy always has the
pip or something and the poor coun
ty officer must dig down to get her
some “medicine"; then the “I voted
for you” buzzards make regular calls
and must be greased. All this is a
part of the game and it costs money.
The heading is a lure; we don’t
believe the delegation is “tight.”
A peculiar situation exists in that the
delegation is certainly not going to
raise anyone’s salary unless they
ask for it and the officers are certain
ly not going to ask for it for fear
that old John Voter will hear the
news. So what? So we, having
had a small hand in getting them
cut, now appeal to the delegation to
do the fine thing and give the boys
some more money—say a flat 10 per
cent for all of them. It can be done
without any increase in taxation.
There are of course lots of smart
fellows who “would do the job fer
whut they’re gittin’ and be glad to
git it.” Oh sure, and the reason they
are free to take jobs is that they are
not capable of holding a job. We
have a good, conscientious set of
county officers and they should be
paid decent salaries.
Members of the delegation are all
reasonable men; they know what it
costs to make campaigns and we be
lieve they can be depended upon to
look into the matter of raises for
county officers. We do not ask that
they raise salaries on our say-so;
we only ask that they investigate
what officers have to pay for clerk
hire and other expense. They will
find that there are officers in the
court house which net the holders
less than $150 a month, which is poor
pay for a responsible office.
MRS. R. ADVISES
Madame Roosevelt, wife of more-
abundant-life-Franklin told a gather
ing of farm women in Georgia that
they should get more out of life than
“enough to live on.” She didn’t
bother to tell them how to get it.
If the madame had to plow a mule on
some of the red hills in Newberry
county under the New Deal as some
of our women do she would wonder
where in the heck the “enough”
came from, much less a surplus.
Mrs. R. was born with a silver
spoon in her mouth and has never
konwn want. It is silly of her run
ning over the country prating about
what OUGHT to be. When she
earns her first dollar by the sweat
of her brow farm women will be
more prone to listen to her. Clip
ping coupons provides more readily
for the abundant life than hoeing cot
ton, and clipping coupons is probab
ly the hardest work Mrs. R. ever en
gaged in—that is, outside; of running
her mouth.
Some of those farm women might
have suggested that she tell her
Franklin to stop spending money on
professional loafers and give some
of it to the said farm women who
through the last depression worked
and squaked about “relief."
Hundreds of millions went to loaf
ers and liquor heads from the treas
ury while farm women worked in
competition with Negro farm labor
to earn necessities and stay off relief.
Mrs. R. was simply plowing the
wrong heifer; sh e should have been
spouting to the boondogglers.
