The August be ginnings are not arduous but they are essential. « First visit all the rose gardens in your vicinity and closely observe the plants. From this careful study make your list of the varie ties you want for your own garden and place your order for fall or early spring delivery. August is the test month for Hybrid Tea roses and no garden is complete without these as well as the old tried and true Hardy Perptuals. Many of the old Hy brid Tea varieties have been im proved so that they are very hardy even in northern climates. The ideal hybrid Tea rose is one whose foliage is fine in August with buds opening into perfect bloom. So the varities boasting this condition are the best choice an amateur can make when look ing around for # roses that will do well for him. Certain other plants must have attention now or never if we want them in our gardens. Madonna Lillies, Autumn Cro cus, Meadow Saffron and Orien tal Poppies as well as Peonies and Iris must be transplanted and established in August. The Autumn Crocus will give you color in your garden in Sep tember and on into October. They are a lovely lavender color and sturdy and strong. Plant them in sandy soil so that they will have good drainage and they will bloom autumn after autumn to repay you for working in the Au gust sun. Oriental Poppies like'a well drained spot, too. If water stands on the crown of the plant throughout the winter there is grave danger of serious dam age. Sandy soil mounded up around the plant so the water will drain away from it insures successful wintering for Orien tal Poppies. Save laundry in summer by using small turkish towels for hand and face in your bathrooms.
