Law can have no rightful authority apart from the will of God. The flrst four commandments deal with duties to God. Idolatry does not belong alone to those who bow “down to wood and stone/’ Anything usurping the place of Odd is idolatry. God must have su preme place. His name must be revered and his Sabbath kept. The remaining commandments complement the first four. A man not dutiful to God cannot be duti ful toward his fellows. But- serving God, he will serve men. Can you think of one loving God and dis honoring his parents, murdering, committing adultery, stealing, bearing false witness, and covet ous? God’s law is not arbitrary. It Is based in the needs of men. Law it is. but it is also a statement of the things which will be for the good 'of men. The law is not primarily addressed to aggregations of men, but to individuals. Each command ment begins with "Thou shalt” or its equivalent. The law is personal; also responsibility. Y., is back in use , again for the first time since 1941. The Boston Red Sox have traded ' Eddie Lake, an infielder, to the Detroit Tigers for Rudy York, first baseman. The deal was a straight man for man exchange, without the usual cash to even things up. Sam Rice, who quit the Washington Sen ators ten years ago after 19 years of baseball, is now raising chick ens. He operates a 43-acre ranch near Ashton, Md., where he spe cializes in hatching and breeding. Jockey George Woolf, who has ridden winners in practically all the big money races in the country, was killed in a fall at Santa Anita . . . the horse stumbled and threw Woolf over his head. The 36-year* old jockey died of a brain injury. It is reported from Hamburg, Ger many, that Max Schmeling, for mer world heavyweight chamrion, may be matched with Walter Neu-. sel, present German champion. Clemson, Jan. 5.—The Progres sive Farmer, widely circulated and Influential agricultural journal of the Southern States, has named Dr. G. H. Aull, Clemson College agricultural economist and rural sociologist, as its "man of the Year in Service to South Carolina Agriculture” for 1945. The an nouncement, made in the January 1946 issue of The Progressive Farmer, carries a sketch of Dr. Aull and his services. Brief ex tracts from the sketch follow. “When Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson was in South Carolina recently, his attention was attracted to a study of the agricultural-industrial relation ships and the interdependence of urban-rural populations in Ander son county, which had been made under direction of Dr. Aull. Tt’s the sort of thing that ought to be done all over America,’ said the Secretary. "For a long time Dr. Aull was especially noted for his studies showing the unfair taxation of farms all over South Carolina. "Mr. Aull has also been active in encouraging farm people to de velop rural industries, especially In order to provide income and oc cupation for idle labor on the farms and for the November-April period when cotton and tobacco farmers have so many idle days. "Another field that has attracted his interest is land economics. He has made a thorough study of land ownership and use and has prepared several publications which provide a sound basis for the development of postwar agri cultural programs and policies. “In the postwar years, farmers of South Carolina and all the other states must give increasing attention to these problems of taxation, tenancy, marketing, and rural industries.
