An derson To Visit Anderson Columbia, S. C., Oct. 22.—A?ri culture Commissioner J. Roy Jones said today that he had just returned a trip to An derson where £$£borate plans are under way for the entertainment of Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson who will visit that section November 13 and 14 to at oouuieasiern Farm Con ference. According to Commissioner Jones the highlight of the cabinet officer’s visit will be when he ad dresses thousands of visitors a McCant’s Stadium in Anderson at three o’clock on the 'afternoon o Wednesday, November 14. All of the Commissioners of Ag- ricuture of the southeastern states have been asked by Com missioner Jones to meet the Sec retary. This invitation was issued by the South Carolina Commis sioner who was asked to do so by the Anderson Chamber of Com merce Committee which is in charge of the event. In addition to the Commission ers of Agriculture many other prominent visitors will be present, including United States senators, state governors and members of congress from the southeastern states, as well as Extension Service leaders, Grange and Farm Bureau officials and representatives from other farm organizations. I. W. Duggan, governor of the Farm Credit Administration, who is a native of Anderson, will be pres ent. David E. Lilienthal, chair man of the Tennessee Valley Au thority, is among the other prom inent visitors expected to attend. The Chamber of Commerce committee in charge of arrange ments is composed of Dr. Joe H. Carter, Wilton E. Hall, and D. W Watkins, Director of the Clemson Extension Service. Two hundred reserved seats are being placed directly in front of the speaker’s stand for Master Farmers of the Anderson area, legislative delegation*, mayors, editors and other noted guests, a- mong them being members of the Senate and House Agricultural Committees. The legislators will be led by T. J. Hendricks of Spar tanburg, who is chairman of the House group, and Senator Marvin E. Abrams of Newberry, who is head of the Senate Agricultural Committee. The committee has announced the program, which will be broad cast over 114 radio stations, will be as follows: Secretary Anderson is scheduled to arrive at Clemson College the night of November 13 and next morning at eight o’clock he will attend a breakfast at the coIlt& which will be presided over by Dr. R» F. Poole, Clemson’s president. Meeting with the Secretary will be state leaders from North Car olina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. The Secre tary will be greeted at Clemson by J. Roy Jones, the South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture, who is past president of the Associa tion of Agriculture Commissioners of the United States. After breakfast the Secretary will be shown the Clemson campus and will visit the historic Calhoun mansion which was given to the college by Thomas G. Clemson who was the first Secretary of Agriculture of the United States. After the campus tour a motor cade will accompany Secretary Anderson to Pendleton where he will see the Pendleton Farmers’ Society Building which is the old est such structure in the United States. Members of the Pendle ton Lions’ Club and other promi nent citizens of that section have arranged for Secretary Anderson to present soil building awards to forty progressive farmers of An derson, Oconee and Pickens Coun ties. At one o’clock at the Calhoun Hotel in Anderson the Secretary and other distinguished citizens, including Senators Burnet R. May bank and Olin D. Johnston, will be guests at a luncheon. A. Durham, president of the Chamber of Commerce, will serve as master of ceremonies, and the cretary will be introduced by Agriculture Commissioner J. Roy Jones. Commissioner Jones will also introduce Secretary Anderson at the big meeting to be held at McCant’s Stadium at three o’clock hat afternoon. The Anderson Chamber cf. Ccm- mercc Committee estimated that more than 5,000 farmers and other citizens from South Caro- ina and adjoining states will be on hand to hear Secretary Ander son’s main address. Stressing the importance of proper attention in October to livestock feeding, breeding, and management problems, County Farm Agent G. W. Bonnette makes these suggestions: Animal Husbandry Sow some small grain (barley, oats, or rye) for winter hog graz ing. Castrate pigs when they are three to six weeks of age and use precaution to control the screw- worm. Arrange to feed out a carload of steers and use the manure on the farm. Turn beef cattle on a reserved pasture which has not been grazed during latter part of sum mer. Arrange to purchase purebred beef bulls if needed. Observe the herds for screw- worm infestation and give treat ment if necsssary. Dairying Run cows on hay and corn fields to clean up after harvest. Feed each cow in proportion to milk yield shown by milk records. Cull low-producing cows to a- void wintering them. Increase hay and silage as pas ture grasses die. Secure service of good purebred bull to make calves more valuable. Lime the pastures. Plant winter grazing at once using four bushels per acre of a mixture of small grains with 15 to 20 pounds of crimson clover or vetch. Poultry Move pullets to laying house be fore they come into full produc tion. Clean and spray the laying house and delouse the pullets before putting them in it. Keep grain before pullets in or der to get them in good flesh be fore coming into egg production. Dispose of any light breed pul lets that are not laying by the time they are 6 1-2 months old, heavy breeds, 7 1-2 months old. Select and sell nonlaying hens.
