During this period, the Maccabees gained a brief inde pendence—then Judah fell to the Greeks and later to the Romans. The Apocrypha, written in the period, was included in the Greek translation of the Old Testament, is also included in the Roman Vul gate, but excluded from the Prot estant version. The exile purged the Jews of idol atry but not of negligence of reli gion. But, as always, there was a “remnant” of aspiring souls. Priests and people alike must be cleansed for the day of the Lord. Let us hope the results achieved at San Francisco will endure, not by or ganization but by love and brother hood among men who put their trust in the heavenly Father. The verses from Luke tell at the people’s Joy in Christ’s com ing, those from Paul of the con summation ot the ancient plan of redemption through Christ. As to the Old Testament and the inter val between its dispensation and that of the New prepared for the Saviour’s coming, may the record of the completed revelation of God to men prepare us to receive Jesus fully — that through us he may be received by others.
