McCORMICK MESSENGER, McCORMICK, SOUTH CABOi-INA Thursday, May 17, 1945 Hare Informed Farm Equipment Soon To Be Sold Congressman Hare was today furnished with a statement from the Office of War Information ad vising that the Surplus Property Board would soon arrange pro cedures for channeling trucks, ma chinery and equipment that may be used on farms to rural areas where they will meet the short ages, as well as the demands for such equipment by farmers. The statement says in part: , The Surplus Property Act of 1944 contains special recogni tion of American agriculture. The act provides that the Sur plus Property Board, in coop eration with the War Food Ad ministration, shall arrange for the sale of surplus property in rural localities and in such a manner as to assure farmers and farmer^ cooperatives e- qual opportunity to buy. The act further; authorizes the board, in cooperation with the Agricultural Adjustment Ad ministration to develop pro grams for the sale to farmers and farmers’ cooperatives of needed trucks, machinery and farm equipment in places where shortages of these items impair farm production. The War Food Administrator under the Surplus Property Act will provide disposal agencies throughout the Nation where such equipment will be allocated ac cording to the needs and demands "■.Si. Pulpwood Shortage Acute The need for “double packaging” vast quan tities of supplies for shipment across the Pacific has pushed pulpwood requirements higher than ever before. There must be no let-up in the flow of pulpwood now. Keep it coming till the Jap too is licked. The statement says sales will be made also through community auctions, which should contribute much to the conveni ence of farmers and should, to some extent, prevent hoarding by unscrupulous dealers and ’the de manding of excessive prices. However, the Congressman was advised the farmers should not expect a flood of surplus proper ty at give-away prices. Some of the goods and equipment listed will include, in addition to trucks, equipment and machinery, such articles as wire, wire fencing, roof ing, farm tools, twine, electric wir ing and supplies, harness and har ness hardware, paint, lumber, etc Mr. Hare has requested the Of fice cf War Information for more specific information as to the number and location of agencies so far established in his State anc’ District so that he may be better able to furnish Information to thi effect to rural areas.
