Medium Grain Sorghums Good In South Carolina Clem son, April 14. — Grain sor- tdrams are supplementing the farmer’s grain needs in many sec tion* of the state, W. H. Craven, agronomist of the Clemson Ex tension Service, said today. In the past few years the drawf * varieties of grain sorghums have been planted and growers have found they can be harvested very satisfactorily with combines, Mr. Craven stated. County Agent J. T. Graves of Barnwell county is planting 11 different varieties with seed from Texas, California, and Kansas. In addition to the drawf varieties that are now being used, these demonstrations will include such varieties as Caprock, Bonita, Dou ble Dwarf Milo, Imperial Kafir, Midland, Cody, and Early Kalo. Mr. Craven points out that the Crain sorghums are well adapted to droughty conditions and will make a satisfactory yield where com practically fails. They are also coarse feeders, which ac counts for their drought resistance ^nd splendid yields on soils which are not in the highest state of cul tivation. It should be kept in mind, how ever, that if the excellent yields from these sorghums are to be maintained, a complete fertilizer appMcation is necessary. An ap plication of 200 to 600 pounds of a 1-12-6 should give good results on average soils. It has been found that planting should be done during the latter part of - June in order that the plants may mature during October when the eights are long and cool and there ’sis very little rainfall. Police Officials Open Brake- Check Program On April 15, police of McCormick began participation in the Nation- Wide Brake Check Program in the effort to reduce accidents and con serve the dwindling supply of cars, according to C. A. Fleming, Chief of Police. “This is not an enforcement drive,” said the Chief of Police, “but is being conducted to inform drivers and assist them in avoid ing an accident.” By means of a new and simple check, the police hope to locate the most dangerous brakes in use and warn motorists of the "urgency of getting their barkes adjusted or -eoaired. The cheek will be ap plied only to passenger cars in volved in traffic violations, where the car is moving, or when the vehicle is involved in an accident. Brakes will also be checked on cars which are operated in a manner indicating that the brakes are un safe. “The brake check takes only a minute to make,” according to Chief Fleming. “In making the check, the officer will place a wood block one inch thick on the floor board under the foot pedal. He then depresses the pedal. If it strikes the block before the brakes begin to grip, the brakes will be considered dangerous and in need of immediate attention. If the brakes grip while the pedal is slightly more than one inch from the floor board they are not to be considered safe and the driv er will be urged to have corrective repairs taken. “The brake check was determin ed after careful research, and it is based pn the pedal pressure need ed to stop cars safely. The aver age car requires about 30 pounds of pedal pressure to permit brakes to do the best job of stopping the car. With only one inch of ef fective distance left in applying the brakes, it is possible to build up only about fifty pounds of pedal pressure, which is far les? than is needed for proper stop ping. “This brake check does not blanket all motorists. It applies only to conditions of violations and accidents stated above. How ever, motorists in general, for their own protection and safety, and to conserve their own cars, are urged to cooperate. If motorists have any doubt as to the safety of their (brakes, they should have them tested immediately at the r pair shop and have them adjust 1 or repaired as soon as possible,” said Chief Fleming. The Nation-Wide brake ch ek is being applied in every state ' ith 5,000 or more police chiefs, sher iffs, patrol officers and others co operating. South Carolina law enforcement officials have endorsed this pro gram and will actively participate. In the manual are detailed descrip tions of 90 native tree species and 9 exotics. Drawings of leaves, twigs, and fruit show the charac teristics of each species. An outstanding feature is the “Key Characteristics” which de scribes briefly the features that | separate the species from all oth ers. Other information includes the important wood charactris-; tics, the uses, and the general dis- | tribution of the various species in] South Carolina. The purpose of the handbook is explained in the foreword: “Inas much as our forests are commer cially of great importance, and since South Carolina has more' than 10 million of her 19 million acres classified as woodlands, it is desirable that we know more a- bout our tress.” The handbook will be a valuable aid to all nature-lovers, scouts, and members of 4-H clubs, Mr. Barker suggests.
