In the mournful repitition no ticed last week, the Israelites a- gain did evil in God's sight, and were “mightily oppressed” for 20 years by Jabin. .Deborah, the only woman among the Judges, arose to liberate them and aroused Barak to action. Sisera was glad to meet the Israelites on the plain of Esdrae- lon, famous battlefield, where he could employ his 900 chariots of iron. But Josephus writes that hail and sleet beat into the faces of the Canaanites and the Song of Deborah relates that “the stars in their courses fought against Sis era” and that the Kishon swept the enemy away. The plain be came a morass, the occupants left the chariots bogged in the mud and fled for their lives. The light infantry of the tribes pur sued and slaughtered the enemy. Sisera fled “on his feet” and I sought refuge in Heber’s tent. Evidently a spy in the pay of Ja bin,'Heber had moved his tent (Judges 4: 11) near the muster- ground to watch Barak’s move ments. But Jael did not agree in the treachery of her husband. The reader may form his own judgment of her deed in killing the sleeping Sisera. * The Song of Deborah, a lyric ode, is a great war poem. Its poetic structure is somewhat ob scured in the printing of the Bible. Abounding in striking imagery, it celebrates the muster ing of the armies, the battle and the rout of the Canaanites, and closes with a picture of Sisera’s mother watching in vain for the return of her son, also the prayer that all the enemies of God may perish. And let us now offer the prayer that women of Deborah’s character and purpose may arise in our own ‘land—'to preserve in righteousness the American home and to lead and inspire our peo ple to those things which will ex alt our national life. til They Are The Only EYES You Will Ever Have DR. More Workers Are Needed At Charles ton Navy Yard Men from nearly every county of South Carolina who have heeded the Navy’s beckoning for shipbuilders to construct the in vasion ships in “doubly quick” time gave concrete answer last week to the appeal—they launch ed four LSM (landing ships for mechanized equipment) in one 20 minute period, setting a Navy Yard record for multiple launch ings. Rear Admiral Jules James, USN, Commandant of the Sixth Naval District, looking proudly at the ships and the perspiring South Carolinians who had built them, referred to the recent telegrams from Secretary of the Navy For- restal and Admiral Ernest King, Commander in Chief of the U- nited States, in which they urged “full speed” construction of land ing ships vitally needed “now”. “It gives me a great deal of 1 pleasure today to point to these four LSMs now awaiting freedom from their ways and say to the Secretary and Admiral King on behalf of the men of Charleston Navy Yard: “Gentlemen, here ls your an swer”. This was the first quadruple launching at the Charleston Navy Yard. But more are scheduled to hurry victory. Keels have already been laid again on these ways which only last week held the LSMs 140-141-142 and 143. Preliminary launching cere monies were the same, but as the mass launching took place, the event took on added significance— for the quadruple launching told the story of mass production of invasion craft for the navy’s am phibious froces now under way in the largest naval establishment of the Southeast. South Carolinians who had never seen a ship launched before lined the ways for a good look at the ship they had helped build. Admiral James called attention to the fact ftiore workers are needed to keep the schedule “on time”. Special United States Employment Service and Civil Service employees are touring South Carolina to hire workers in practically all trades, and without necessarily shipbuilding experi-1 ence, who are not now in war work or who are not employed at their highest skills. “Men of South Carolina will rally to this Navy call and keep the big invasion ships launching at the ‘quadruple’ speed now set as a standard for South Caro lina’s Navy Yard,” Mr. W.
