REV. ROBERT Hi HARPER
The Value of the Church to the
Social Order..
, Lesson for December 13: Mat
tfccw 5:13 16; Mark 12:13-17;
Peter 2:13-17.
, Golden Text: Matthew 5:13, If.
An old man reminded that he
was careful to live near the
churches, and was then reminded
once lived in a section without
churhces, and was then reminded
that he had come away from
that section. Many critics are
really trusting to the security giv
en a community by the Church.
Consider the value of the 'church
fo the whole of the social order.
Like salt, the Church preserves
the good things worth saving
among men. And as the great
source of light, the Church has
conserved and applied spiritual
truth in all the affairs of life.
The Separation of Church and
State does not deny to the for
mer a right influence upon t]}e
latter, both in ^ forming good
character in men and preaching
Meals of truth and justice. The
rights the State insures to men
should lead them to give it their
hearty support. Certainly Chris
tians should be good citizens.
In the apostles’ time it was
sound policy to give no offense to
established government but, first,
Christians should be loyal to gov-
srnment because in its origin and
authority it is from God.
The whole program of a Chris
tian is set forth in the last verse
mt the lesson. The Value of the
Church to the Social Order will
be realized as Christians regard
the rights of all, love their breth-
len. fear God, and honor the
king—be loyal to their own gov
ernment, whatever its form.

Farm Calendar For
December Guidance
The really proud farmer shuns
•“the common herd” by using pure-
sires with his livestock.
Keep ’em firing—with junk!
tut
Bomb the Japs with junk!
Even in December farmers must
keep busy with important activi-
ies, chiefly looking towards the
uture, says County Agent G. W.
Bonnette, who lists these brief
suggestions:
Agronomy
1, Save plant food for 1943 crops
“Green fields for Christmas”. 2.
Put cotton under cover to prevent
oss of $5 or more per bale. 3.
Clean up briars and plum thick
ets around edges of fields. 4.
Bed down stalls and barns with
eaves, pine needles, or grain
straw; the bigger the manure
pile the smaller the fertilizer bill.
5. Continue to build artificial or
synthetic manure pens. 6. This is
a good time to put out lime.
Horticulture
1. Make plans for Victory gar
den in 1943, get catalogs, and
order seeds before seedsmen are
out of desirable varieties. 2. If
ruit trees have not already been
set, do so this month; fall or win
ter planting in the South is pref
erable to early spring planting. 3
Prepare hotbeds for sowing in
January. 4. Prune fruit trees and
bunch grapes. 5. Propagate grapes
and ornamental deciduous shrubs
from new cuttings. 6. Terrace all
land to be planted to peaches be
fore trees are set.
Insects and Diseases
1. Observe how well long, close-
fitting shucks protect corn against
weevils. 2. Burn orchard prun-
ings to destroy shot-hole borers.
3. Burn twigs severed by girdlers.
4. Apply lime sulfur or oil emul-
