Summer Care of Hens
During the hot summer months
the comfort of the hens is impor
tant if they are to “stay on the
.lob.” Properly ventilated houses,
ihade, fresh water, a well-bal
anced ration, and freedom from
lice and mites will contribute to
the hen’s comfort and, hence,
to securing good egg production,
according to Miss Matilda Bell,
County Home Dem. Agent.
See that the hen house is well-
ventilated and cool, but not
drafty. Hot houses cause out
breaks of summer colds and
roup. Clean the houses and spray
them with motor oil and kerosene
for mites. Supply shade and a
good green range for grazing. Cow
peas or soy beans make a good
summer range. Treat the hens
4or lice, using a good insect pow
der on the body of the bird, or
apply a nicotine sulphate com
pound on the roost poles.
Supply a plenty of cool, clean
drinking water. This is essen
tial to egg production. One
hundred hens need 4 to 5 gal
lons of water daily. Water is
the cheapest commodity on the
average farm and one of the ut
most importance to the hens.
Peed of the right kind and in
sufficient quantities is also very
important in the production of
summer eggs. Try to make the
hens eat as much mash or milk
as possible, and enough grain to
maintain body weight. Give them
free access to mash all day and
all the grain they will eat in the
late afternoon. The hens should
eat a little more mash than grain
during the summer. Hens that
have free range sometimes do not
eat enough mash for maximum
egg production. For this reason
many successful poultry raisers
leave the hens in the house dur
ing the morning and turn them
on the range only in the after
noon.
Flock owners who secure an
egg production of 50 per cent or
more during the summer make
more profit during the year than
those who get low production in
the summer. This year it is more
Important than ever to see that
every hen in the flock does her

HUGH C. BROWN.
Henry Morgenthau Jr., Secretary of the Treasury, today made public the official War Bond Quotas by States for
the month of July, which places the nation on a Billion-dollar-a-month basis to aid in meeting the War cost. The above
table also gives May War Bond sales in the various states in comparison to the May Quotas. (June sales by states will be
available for publication shortly.) The percentage of Quotas range from 71.3 percent above quota in Utah, to 22.6 percent
below the quota in Montana, but puts the nation as a whole above the $600,000,000 total May quota. Vulnerable Alaska
and Hawaii led all states in sale of War Bonds on quota basis. #
"Everybody, every pay day ten percent” is the Treasury slogan which is expected to place one of the attractive new
window stickers in every American home. “We’re Buying at Least 10%” reads the sticker, printed in the national col
ors. The new window stickers and the new “10%” lapel button, which indicates the wearer is investing at least ten per
cent of his income in War Bonds every pay day, are yardsticks of patriotism in the War Bond drive.

U.S.Treasury Officfbl War Bond
Quotas for July
,July Quota for State, $4,320,000
The above map of South Carolina shows the War Bond
quotas, by counties, for the month of July, 1942. Total
War Bond quota for the state is $4,320,000. With the
National quota total placed at a billion dollars, the
nation goes into high gear in its support of the War
financing and to give our fighting forces adequate im
plements of war which will bring ultimate Victory.
American Soldiers, Sailors, - Marines and Airmen are
on every front. They are giving 100 percent for theif
country. What are we doing here on the home fiont?
Are we lending at least tfen percent of income to help
them? It’s very little. But to fight this war success
fully our country needs a billion dollars in War Bonds
every month from us—the People. Let’s Go, America.
