Vote In Referendum
On Marketing Quotas
McCormick county cotton pro*
tiucers were urged this week to
consider the important problems
that face the American cotton in*
dustry, and to make every possible
effort to vote in the cotton mar
keting quota referendum Saturday,
December 13.
H. M. Freeland, AAA chairman,
reminded cotton producers that
if a large national vote is polled,
the Nation’s leaders will be assured
that producers are studying world
conditions and taking the initia
tive in settling their share of
them.
Mr. Freeland pointed out that
no Government loan can be of
fered during any marketing year
for whiA quotas are rejected.
“Quotas and the loan go hand in
hand to keep the marketing of
cotton on an even keel. The^oan
has provided a method whereby
producers can hold their cotton
when prices are unsatisfactory.”
Every cotton producer, regard
less of whether he is tenant,
sharecropper, or owner, may vote
in the referendum.
A most important National De
fense N.YA.. Project will open in
Greenwood at once for the train
ing of unemployed white girls be
tween the ages of 18 and 25 who
wish employment in mills and es
tablishments using power sewing
machines. These girls may com
mute back and forth from home
; each day or live with relatives in
Greenwood or live in the N.Y.A.
Resident Center in Greenwood
while they take this N.YA. train
ing according to Mrs. Mamie S.
Summer who is Youth Personnel
Director with headquarters in ‘the
Newberry office.
It is expected that many girls
living in the adjoining counties of
Newberry, Saluda, Edgefield, Mc
Cormick, Laurens and Abbeville
will be most interested. They may
drive into Greenwood each day to
take advantage of this oppor
tunity.
The N.YA. office is open in
McCormick each Thursday from
8:30 A. M. until 4:30 P. M.

Farm Production
Goals For 1942
Are Announced
McCormick county farm pro
duction goals for 1942, calling for
increases over 1941 ranging from
no increase in the case of peanuts
tc 15 per cent for wheat, were ap
proved last week by the McCor
mick County USDA Defense
Board.
H. M. Freeland, chairman of the
County Defense Board, said that
next year’s production, based on
the goals set up, likely would be
the greatest on record. Largest
increases are called for in the
production of meats, poultry, and
dairy products, fruits and vege
tables for canning, and peanuts
for oil.
“Agriculture has one of the
biggest jobs in the National De
fense Program”, Mr. Freeland de
clares. “Guns, planes, and am
munition are vital in the defense
of our country, but no nation ever
survived which did not have
enough to eat. I agree whole
heartedly with the Secretary of
Agriculture, who has said so many
times that ‘food will win this war
and write the peace’. I believe
adequate food supplies are our
first line of defense.”

PEOPLES DRUG STORE
McCormick, S. C.
Columbia, Dec. 6.—^Planning to
produde a high class product for
sale is a most important factor in
the profitable management of a
producing herd of beef cattle, ac
cording to J. R. Hawkins, live
stock specialist of the Clemson
College Extension Service. To look
ahead and arrange the feeding,
care, and management so that at
some definite future date the
owner will get “paid off” is funda
mental to success, he declares.
“Strange to say, many beginners
ir the cattle business seem to
think that the title to a beef herd
guarantees prosperity”, says Mr.
Hawkins. “This attitude and the
failure to offer for sale a product
for which the public will pay
liberally has put more beginners
out of the cattle business than
any other one thing.
“Since the housewife spends 80
per cent of the family income, it
behooves the cattleman to lend an
attentive ear to her demands. She
wants young tender beef in not
too large cuts and portions and
with fat enough to be palatable
cut not wasteful.
“The combination which repre
sents the most economical produc
tion and maximum returns per
cow from the standpoint of the
producer and the most acceptable
pioduct to the consumer is a
heavy calf v/hich has received
grain while getting the milk from
the dam,” the specialist explains.
“Not only does this class of cattle
represent economical production,
but an animal which will sell at
the top market price can be
finished with a minimum amount
of grain.
“Having once had a taste of
quality beef, the housewife says
to the butcher, ‘Give me some
more of the same kind of meat X
got here last time.’ ‘No consumer
resistance here’, you say, and
hence the producer can sell his
fed calves at a good price and in
turn can plan his herd manage
ment to offer a crop of calves for
sale each year or more often if he
chooses.”

For the past 7 years there has
been a steady increase in the seal
sale here and much good work has
been accomplished in the county
because of these increased funds.
A report of the most recent
activity here is reported below:

Tuberculosis work in McCormick
County:
Nurse Blanch Sowell, has work
ed in the County doing follow up
work among the active cases of
tuberculosis, suspects and con
tacts. An educational program
was carried out among the larger
schools and teachers’ meeting
was called in order that the nurse
could talk with the teachers and
make some plans of a better
health program in the schools
and homes.
We must remember tuberculosis
is not dramatic, it is the most
insideous disease in its approach
and the most drastic in its effect.
This work is supported by the
Christmas seals that are sold
each year.
Need Is Urgent
For Men In U. S.
Navy Now
Ralegh, N. C, Dec. 9.—“The
United States is at war and the
need for men in America’s fighting
Navy is urgent,” today asserted
Lt.-Comdr. McFarland W. Wood,
officer-in-charge of Navy recruit
ing in the Carolinas.
“Carolinians have always been
foremost in defending this coun
try in time of war and I am sure
the people of these two Southern
states will not fail to respond
now,” he declared. ' < 4K
“During all the wars in Amer
ica’s history, the men in North
Carolina and South Carolina have
joined the colors to fight off at
tackers, and a quick, large muster
of recruits is expected from the
Carolinas to help defend the
nation in this time of crisis.
“The Navy is relaxing its physi
cal standards to enlist men be
tween 17 and 49 years of age in
the regular Navy or Naval Reserve.
Men with physical defects will be
accepted if the defects can be
corrected after entrance into
service. Applicants who have been
previous physical rejections or
who think they might be rejected
! are asked to contact their nearest
recruiting station.
“All active men between the
ages of 17 and 49 may now take a
definite step toward defending
America by applying at Navy re
cruiting stations in North Carolina
at Rawleigh, Charlotte, Greens
boro, Salisbury, Asheville, New
Bern, Wilmington, or in South
Carolina at Columbia, Spartan
burg, Greenville, Florence,
Charleston.
The Raleigh recruiting station
and the 11 sub-stations over North
and South Carolina have gone on
full war-time footing, with all re
cruiters being placed on 24-hour
call.

Rural patrons of the local post
office are urged by Postmaster J.
E. Bell to obtain their own stamps
and stamp their own mail during
the busy Christmas season this
year.
When the rural carriers have to
stamp mail left on their route,
^hey lose valuable time and are
delayed in making their rounds,
he pointed out. Since the season
al rush also delays the carriers
and makes their work harder,
anything that the patrons can do
to help conserve time will be ap

Save Farm Manure
Millions Now Lost
Primitive Methods
Need Not

Be Modern
ADVERTISE HERE!!
Clemson, Dec. 6.—It is more im
portant now than ever that farm
ers should save and wisely utilize
farm manure, says H. A. Woodle,
Clemson extension agronomist,
who declares that it is possible to
prevent most of the losses which
cause the greatest waste of fer
tilizer.
The largest part of fertility
losses in manure is usually due to
lack of sufficient bedding, since
much of the value of liquid
manure is lost through seepage
and leaching when bedding is in
sufficient. Yet there is usually
plenty of litter or straw on every
farm to prevent such losses.
“It has been estimated that the
annual production of manure in
South Carolina has a value of ap
proximately $12,000,000. consider
ing only the value of the nitrogen,
phosphoric acid, and potash”, Mr.
Woodle continues. “When the
organic matter and the other
plant nutrients are considered, the
value is much higher. It is be
lieved that about 75 per cent of
the value of this farm manure is
lost by improper handling and
lack of attention.
“It is difficult to put a dollars
and cents value on manure, since
it really has a commercial and an
agricultural value. The commer
cial value is based on the nitrogen,
phosphoric acid, and potash con
tent. The agricultural value is
based on the increase in crop
yields, and the favorable soil con
ditions which last for more than
one year. Generally, farm manure
is considered to have a commer
cial value of about $2.50 per ton.
However, the greatest benefit
from manure is realized only when
it is combined with other prac
tices of good soil management.”
