Negro man. Tried and found not
guilty of assault and battery with
intent to kill.
The State vs. James Williams,
Negro man. Pleads guilty to four
counts and was sentenced to State
Penitentiary for a total period of
22 years.
The State vs. Luther Anderson,
Negro man. Charged with murder.
Defendant was found guilty of
murder. Defendant sentenced to
be electrocuted Nov. 28, 1941.
In Civil Court one case was tried
Thursday, that of Mrs. Dan A.
Bell, plaintiff, vs. P. W. Roper,
defendant. Verdict of $300.00 for
plaintiff.
Court adjourned sine die late
Thursday evening.

Clemson. Oct. 14.—In 1941 there
was an increase over the previous
year of approximately 25 per cent
in number of South Carolina
farmers planting wheat and in
wheat acreage harvested, says
Thos. W. Morgan, assistant direc
tor of the Clemson College Exten
sion Service, citing figures from
the state office of the Agricultural
Adiustment Administration.
“These figures show”, Mr. Mor- !
gan reports, “that in 1940, 39.960
farmers harvested 195.710 acres of ;
wheat and in 1941, 48,887 farmers ;
harvested 246.089 acres of wheat ;
in South Carolina, or an increase
of 8 927 farmers and 50,379 acres.
“Representing an average of
only a few acres per farmer, this
wheat increase is evidence of the
progress cf the Better Farm Liv
ing program being conducted by
the Extension. Service, the AAA.
county and community leaders,
and other agencies interested in
rural welfare.
“Last fall the Extension Service
campaigned for more farm fami
lies to pledge to grow 75 percent
of their food and feed needs.
Wheat for home use was one of
the principal items pledged by
these better farm livers, and this
year’s impressive increase whll go
a good way toward meeting their
needs. A similar pledge campaign
for Better Farm Living is being
conducted this fall.”

Columbia, Oct. 14.—Women ex
ceeded men in scholarship at the
University of South Carolina in
the second semester last year, ac
cording to figures recently released
by the registrar’s office.
Sorority women and fraternitv
men led the non-fraternity and
sorority groups by small margins
in the scholarship ranking, the
compilation also revealed.
Delta Delta Delta sorority and
Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity led all
other fraternities and sororities in
grades.
