At the present time there are
over a million and a half freight
cars in serviceable condition. But
useless the transportation problem
is handled efficiently, many of
those cars will be standing on
ridings when they could be mov
ing goods.
This same need also applies to
r>ll other means of transportation.
If a truck or a ship spends half
of its time waiting to be unloaded
or loaded, it actually requires two
trucks or ships to do the work
which one might be doing.
WASTE oil
One of the most amazing exam
ples of potential waste in trans
portation has been brought out in
the recent discussions of the oil
shortage in the East.
After apparently making a study
of the situation, Ralph K. Davies,
acting petroleum co-ordinator un
der Secretary of Interior Ickes,
made public a statement to the ef-
'ollowing his statement, John J.
Pelley, president of the Associa-
ion of American Railroads, said
that 20,000 tank cars were not in
ise—lay waiting to transport oil
'xi the Eastern seaboard.
Further check-up showed Mr.
Pelley’s figures were correct and
these cars now are being put into
use. The 20,000 cars are capable
of moving from six to eight mil
lion barrels of oil per month from
Texas to the Atlantic seaboard.
Yet, If Mr. Pelley had not brought
this situation to the public’s at
tention, 16 Eastern states would
have faced a serious shortage in
oil this winter.
Most of the 20,000 extra cars
discovered by Mr. Pelley were
standing at sidings in the private

potato crop and 14 per cent more
hay, does not offset the drastic
reduction of 57 per cent in cotton
prospects, and moderate declines
of 14 per cent in tobacco and 6 per
cent in corn.
The outlook for 22,964,000 bush
els of corn is the same as a month
ago but 6 per cent below produc
tion in 1940 altho slightly above
average outturn. Early com is
generally good but later plantings
are poor to fair only.
The estimate of 70,550,000
pounds of tobacco compares with
82,215,000 pounds produced last
year and the average of 83,656,000
pounds for the years 1930-39. A
somewhat larger acreage was
planted this year but growing
conditions were less favorable and
the estimate of 830 pounds per
acre is 185 pounds below the record
yield of 1940 but about the aver
age yield.
Favorable August weather im
proved hay prospects and the
'orecast of 613,000 tons is 14 per
cent above production in 1940 and
substantially above average.
Sweet potatoes also improved
during the month, and the out
look for 5,200,000 bushels is 3 >er
cent above production in 1940 but
4 per cent below average.

duced in the State, being 61 ’r
cent above production in 1940 and
nearly three times average t-
turn for the years 19C -19.
However, this heavy produ on

and livestock products will also be
large, probably larger than in any
past year.
This year’s crops of barley, rice,
grain sorghums, dry beans, dry
peas, soybeans and total commer
cial vegetables are each expected
to exceed production in any pre
vious season. Fruit production
will be close to previous high
-eccrds and may exceed them.
Flaxseed production is expected to
3e larger than in other years ex
cept 1902 and the peanut crop will
be second to the record crop of a
/ear ago. The crops of wheat,
hay, and tree nuts are all very
large altho below previous peaks.
The crops of corn, oats, rye, sugar
cane and sugar beets will be a-
bove average but not unusual.
Allowing for the effect of the
early September rains in the
Com Belt prospects for fall pas
tures and ranges now seem the
best since 1928 and present mois
ture conditions are unusually
favorable for fall seeding in most
of the winter wheat belt.
Several crops show relatively
low production but no shortage of
supplies. The cotton crop is un
usually small, tobacco production

99 million tons during the four
seasons since the period of
droughts ending in 1936. With
production as now indicated and
the expected 5 to 6 per cent in
crease in livestock as compared
with last year, the production of
feed grain per unit of livestock
would be about equal to the pre
drought average. However, farm
ers will probably continue to feed
milk cows, hens and perhaps other
livestock a little more grain per
head than usual so they will prob
ably use some of their reserve sup
ply. On July 1 farm stocks of feed
grains (excluding wheat) were
equal to a little more than one-
fourth of the quantity produced
last year. The national hay crop
is expected to be the largest since
1927 and with a normal winter it
should be sufficient to feed the
increased number of livestock at
about the usual rate without
drawing on reserves.
Reports on milk and egg pro
duction continue to show new
high records for most of the
crincipal producing areas and for
the country as a whole. On Sep
tember 1 milk production per cow
averaged about 2 per cent higher
than a year ago and, with more
cows on the farms, daily produc
tion was about 5 per cent above
the high production at this time
last year. The September 1 re
ports on egg production showed 3
per cent more eggs per 100 hens
than were reported a year ago.
The crop of citrus fruits pro
duced from this year’s bloom is
now expected to be slightly smaller
than the crop from the bloom of
1940 but this year’s production of
the principal deciduous fruits (in
cluding peaches, pears, grapes.
Three Types of
Underweight
The job of putting on weight has
i never been very widely publicized,
probably because the thin man or
woman isn’t nearly so much
noticed as his or her fat friend . . .
and also because results obtained
from the addition of weight aren’t
nearly so spectacular as those de
rived from a reducing orgy. It has
been my consistent observation,
however, that the thin man has a
far more difficult time putting on
weight than his fat brother has in
taking it off. %
Granted that your problem is
one of increasing your weight, you
must first decide which of three
types of leanness has you in its
clutches: f hereditary leanness,
functional leanness, or careless
leanness.
If you consistently remain at
the same weight year in and year
cut, and if you have been unable
to put on weight through rational
methods, your thinness is un
doubtedly hereditary. It is, there
fore, completely normal and you
have no cause for worry.
Your thinness may be caused by
ill health or some functional dis
turbance. If you are underweight
and continue to lose over a period
of months, see your doctor and
your dentist. They can determine
whether or not your thinness is
due to your teeth, your tonsils a
glandular disturbance or some
other infection which requires
professional treatment.
Your condition, like that of most
^hin people, may be the result of
careless habits in the matter of
diet, exercise, relaxation, and
ileep. The addition of weight in
your case is the result of com-
