T New Govemment Manual Now Ready * Columbia. June 2.—In view of oresent conditions and the impor tance of the federal government of the United States, South Caro linians will be interested in the new United States government manual, 1941, which outlines the national defense program, its or- Tanization, its functions, and its responsibilities, it is announced by Lawrence M. Pinckney, state di rector for the office of govern ment reports. “This manual includes not only information concerning the na tional defense program but also outlines in brief readable form the creation and authority, or ganization, purpose, and activities of all federal departments and agencies, including numerous or ganization charts,” Mr. Pinckney said. The manual is issued three times a year and sells for 75c an issue. Anyone desiring a copy of the manual may send a check or a money order in the amount of 75c to the office of government re ports, 1400 Pendleton street, Co lumbia, South Carolina. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the superintendent of documents. The manual is especially useful to businessmen having dealings with the federal government, to teachers and students of civics and governmental subjects, to public officials, and all citizens interested in government. Urges Purchase Of Defense Bonds And Stamps Columbia, June 2.—Mr. W. P. Bowers, collector of internal rev enue, in a recent interview urged all Americans to invest their sav ings regularly in defense savings bonds and stamps, not only to provide a financial safeguard for the future, but also as a means of applying the brakes to the high cost of living. “Wages and salaries are increas ing every month,” he said. “Many other forms of income are also rising. If we spend all this in creased income, we are likely to create a booming demand for com modities which will result in prices going up and perhaps a wild in crease in the cost of living. In addition, Mr. Bowers pointed out, purchasers of the defense bonds and stamps will be making a definite contribution to the United States government at a critical time in its history. “Why not set aside as much of our incomes in these defense bonds and stamps as we can af ford to. When industry has satis fied governmental requirements for defense weapons, we will be confronted with the necessity for a complete readjustment in our employment problem. These sav ings laid aside now may tide many of us over between jobs a few years from now. “By buying defense bonds and stamps now, we can build up a tremendous source of future pur chases, and help safeguard out democracy at the same time.” Mr. Bowers was interviewed over Radio Station WIS in a broadcast arranged by the office of govern ment reports.
