June Farm Calendar
Brief reminders by County Agent
M. A. Bouknight for busy farmers
show much important work for
early summer.
Agronomy
1. As soon as moisture conditions
permit, plant cowpeas, soybeans,
velvet beans, or crotalaria in all
corn middles and stubble land.
Such acreage of legumes will aid
in meeting the conditions of the
AAA farm program, will produce
food and feed, and will conserve
and build up the soil.
Horticulture
1. Apply quickly available nitro
gen to garden crops if not grow
ing well. 2. Cultivate crops shal
low but frequently to save mois
ture. 3. Mulch tomato plants
heavily with straw or leaves to
hold moisture and prolong fruit
ing season. 4. Pack vegetables
and fruits in the right kind of at
tractive package and get better
prices. 5. Plant a few tomato seed
for a late crop. 6. Make plans to
have plenty of collartds,* turnips,
and “greens” this fall ?.nd winter.
Insects and Diseases
1. Get the boll weevil early with
presquare poison. 2. Examine
banded apple trees every 10 days
and kill codling moth larvae. 3.
Stop the spread of red spiders by
burning weeds and badly infested
plants and applying superfine
du-ting’ julfar. -i. Spray or dust
beans with derris to control Mexi
can bean beetles. 5. Refrain from
planting main crop of corn late to
avoid “shatter worm” damage. 6.
Spray or dust peaches to control
brown rot and curculio. 7. Trans
fer and requeen bees.
Agricultural Engineering
1. Check over the mower for
needed repairs. 2. Remove and
store binder canvas after grain
harvest, and cover all bright parts
of machine with cup grease to pre
vent rusting. 3. Be sure grain is
thoroughly ripe before combining
it. 4. Investigate possibilities of
garden irrigation from wells or
small streams, using pumps or
gravity flow.

New Govemment
Manual Now Ready
*
Columbia. June 2.—In view of
oresent conditions and the impor
tance of the federal government
of the United States, South Caro
linians will be interested in the
new United States government
manual, 1941, which outlines the
national defense program, its or-
Tanization, its functions, and its
responsibilities, it is announced by
Lawrence M. Pinckney, state di
rector for the office of govern
ment reports.
“This manual includes not only
information concerning the na
tional defense program but also
outlines in brief readable form
the creation and authority, or
ganization, purpose, and activities
of all federal departments and
agencies, including numerous or
ganization charts,” Mr. Pinckney
said.
The manual is issued three
times a year and sells for 75c an
issue.
Anyone desiring a copy of the
manual may send a check or a
money order in the amount of 75c
to the office of government re
ports, 1400 Pendleton street, Co
lumbia, South Carolina. Checks
or money orders should be made
payable to the superintendent of
documents.
The manual is especially useful
to businessmen having dealings
with the federal government, to
teachers and students of civics
and governmental subjects, to
public officials, and all citizens
interested in government.
Urges Purchase
Of Defense Bonds
And Stamps
Columbia, June 2.—Mr. W. P.
Bowers, collector of internal rev
enue, in a recent interview urged
all Americans to invest their sav
ings regularly in defense savings
bonds and stamps, not only to
provide a financial safeguard for
the future, but also as a means of
applying the brakes to the high
cost of living.
“Wages and salaries are increas
ing every month,” he said. “Many
other forms of income are also
rising. If we spend all this in
creased income, we are likely to
create a booming demand for com
modities which will result in prices
going up and perhaps a wild in
crease in the cost of living.
In addition, Mr. Bowers pointed
out, purchasers of the defense
bonds and stamps will be making
a definite contribution to the
United States government at a
critical time in its history.
“Why not set aside as much of
our incomes in these defense
bonds and stamps as we can af
ford to. When industry has satis
fied governmental requirements
for defense weapons, we will be
confronted with the necessity for
a complete readjustment in our
employment problem. These sav
ings laid aside now may tide many
of us over between jobs a few
years from now.
“By buying defense bonds and
stamps now, we can build up a
tremendous source of future pur
chases, and help safeguard out
democracy at the same time.”
Mr. Bowers was interviewed over
Radio Station WIS in a broadcast
arranged by the office of govern
ment reports.
