about ten days ago, and continues
to improve satisfactorily.

American Legion
Auxiliary Entertained
Members of the American Legion
Auxiliary were delightfully enter
tained at the home of Mrs. C. H.
Workman on Wednesday after
noon of last week with Mrs. R. L.
Dendy and Mrs. V/. L. Wall assist
ing.
Following the business session
conducted by Mrs. P. W. Roper,
the president, Mrs. Dendy, intro
duced Miss Clara Wideman who
presented Mrs. M. L. Griffith, the
guest speaker.
Mrs. Griffith has spent the last
50 years as a missionary in China.
She and her husband have lived
and worked at Shunteh, Hopei,
North China, at the Inland Mission
where she had charge of a girls’
school. They have been in Amer
ica since last June and are making
their home temporarily at “Ivy
Gates”, the beautiful country home
of Miss Clara Wideman in McCor
mick county, awaiting peace, and
safe sailing conditions -to retire in
England, their native land.
Most interestingly did she speak
of life and conditions in China
and especially of the Chinese
women. Concerning her life’s
work of trying to do the very
things previously mentioned in
the Auxiliary Preamble, “To in-
clulcate a sense of individual ob
ligation to the community, state
and nation; to combat the autoc
racy of the classes and the masses;
to make right the master of
might; to promote peace and good
will on earth, etc.,” she stated that
the gospel of Jesus Christ is man
kind’s greatest uplift and does
more to establish him and pave
the way to righteous living than
anything else in all the world.
Deploring conditions existing in
China since the Japanese invasion,
she mentioned the fact that such
were conditions now existing in
England. When asked to say
more about England, she read por
tions of letters she had received
