Tree Planting
Program
The State Forester advises that
half of the current forest tree
planting season has passed. Tree
planting is not usually carried on
after the last day of February,
therefore, it is highly desirable
that persons desiring to obtain
and plant trees during the present
planting season place their orders
with the district foresters at
Aiken, Spartanburg, Camden,
Florence and Walterboro, or with
the State Forester’s office at Co
lumbia without further delay.
Persons wishing to plant in
order to secure A. A. A. Benefit
Payments for soil conservation
could start their planting Decem
ber 1, 1940, and plant any' time
prior to November 30, 1941. How
ever, inasmuch as the planting
season usually terminates at the
end of February they would of
necessity have to plant between
December-!, 1940, and March, 1941.
• Planting weather has been al
most ideal thus far but if we run
into some extended freezing or
cold rainy weather such as we had
last winter the number of avail
able planting days will be found
reduted. This being the case the
State Forester advises to order
•seedlings at once and plant them
at the earliest opportunity.

WPA Employing
12,798 On Defense
In South Carolina
Lawrence M. Pinckney, state
WPA administrator, Columbia,
said yesterday that 12,798 WPA
employees are working on national
defense projects in South Carolina.
This civilian army, considerably
larger than the entire 1940 popu
lation of the city of Orangeburg,
comprises 12,356 workers on WPA-
operated projects and 442 workers
on projects operated by the army
or the navy with WPA funds.
Numerous buildings on army
and navy reservations, armories,
airports, and road projects along
the strategic routes designated by
the war department as of military
importance are, being rushed by
the WPA in this state.
Included also, are more than
500 trainees on the national de
fense vocational training program
situated in more than 20 different
locations throughout the state.
These WPA workers are preparing
for employment in defense indus
tries. More than 100 other former
trainees on this program are
known to have secured private
employment as a result of this
training.
