Fire Destroys Two Homes Near Town Fire of undetermined origin completely destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Barney R. Hender son and Mr. Frank Henderson early last Friday morning. Only a few household effects were saved and there was no insurance to cover the loss. On Sunday morning ^previous to this Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Cothran also lost **-eir home near McCor mick by fire of unknown origin. It is understood that their loss Publication—Mrs. Arthur Hendrix, was partially covered by insurance. At the close of the business meeting Mrs. Smith, assisted by Mrs. Gary Campbell, Mrs. Wistar Harmon, Mrs. J. B. Smith, Mrs. J. L. Self and Mrs. F.' S. Robinson, served a delicious salad course with iced tea. The' woman’s Society of Chris tian Service held its first meeting on the afternoon of October 9, at four o’clock in the home of Mrs. C. H. Workman with the follow ing as assistant hostesses: Mrs. Paul Holloway, Mrs. Arthur Hen drix, Mrs. Austin Abercrombie and Mrs. Jack Scruggs. A missionary program, “Invest ing Our Heritage”, Was given by Mrs. Wistar Harmon, and ' Mrs. Derrick gave the devotional. A business meeting was held at which time the President, Mrs. Paul Brown, presided. C.• NOTICE OF ELECTION forenoon, and Close at 4 o’clock in the afternoon of the day of elec tion, except in the Cities of Charleston and Columbia where the closing hours shall be 6 o’clock in the afternoon, and shall be held open during these hours without intermission or adjourn ment; and the Manager shall ad minister to each person offering to vote an oath that he is qualified to vote at this election, according to the Constitution of this State, and that he has not voted during this election. The Managers have the power to fill a vacancy, and if none of the Managers attend, the citizens can appoint from among the qualified voters, the Managers, who. after being duly sworn, can conduct the election. At the close of the election, the Managers and Clerk must nroceed publicly to open the ballot boxes and count the ballots therein, and continue without adjournment un til the same is completed, and make a statement of the results for each office and sign the same. Notice is hereby given that the General Election for Presidential and Vice Presidential Electors, and Representatives in Congress will be held at the voting precincts fixed by law in the County of Mc Cormick on Tuesday, November 5, 1940, said day being Tuesday following the first Monday, as pre scribed by the State Constitution. The qualifications for . suffrage are as follows: Residence in State for two years, in the County one year, in the polling precinct in which the elector offers to vote, four months, and the payment thirty days be fore any election of any poll tax then due and payable. Provided, That ministers in charge of an or ganized church and teachefs of public schools shall be entitled to vote after six months’ residence in the State, otherwise qualified. Before the hour fixed for open ing the polls Managers and Clerks must take arid subscribe to the Constitutional oath. The Chair man of the Board of Managers can administer the oath to the other Managers and to the Clerk; a Notary Public must administer the oath to Chairman. The Man agers elect their Chairman and Clerk. Polls at each voting place must be opened at 8 o'clock aJm. and closed at 4 o’clock p. m., except in the Cities of Columbia and Charleston where the closing hours shall be at 6 o’clock p. m.
