True enough, you do not have a finely engraved policy setting forth all your rights, but you do have a Social Security account card and the insurance protection for you and your family is written into the law. This Social Security card, there fore, assumes real importance if you consider the insurance pro tection it affords you and your family. If you lose your card, you should' immediately apply for a duplicate which will carry the same name and account number. This is im portant because you should never have more than one account num ber. There is no charge for the duolicate card which can be ob tained on request at the nearest office of the Social Sectirity Board. Do you, by any chance, have more than one Social Security card? Or is your card now frayed and worn to the extent it should be replaced by a new one? If you have more than one card, it is likely that some of your earnings in the past three years have been credited to one account and other earnings to another ac count. You can correct your ac count in this respect by writing to the Social Security Board. In writing to the Board give complete information on how many cards you have and the name and number on each card. All but one card will be cancelled and credits on the two or more accounts where your wages now appear will be merged into one account. If your card should be replaced, give the Social Security Board the exact name and number on your card and ask for a duplicate. The card issued by the Government is the only official identification of a person’s account. This card has been issued for Social Security ac count purposes only and has no other use as an identification of the holder. Your Social Security card is also used to maintain your wage record under the Unemployment Compensation law, a State law which provides weekly benefits if you lose your job through no fault of your own. Do not confuse the State and Federal legislation. The State law provides protection a- gainst the risk of unemployment while the Federal act provides monthly benefits at age 65 Jbo eli gible workers who retire and also similar payments to the widow and children of a worker who dies before reaching that age. Thf Federal insurance plan ap plies to employers who have one or more employees regardless of whether those employees work on a permanent, part-time, or tempo rary basis. The lawyer, the doc tor, the dentist, the beauty parlor, the small restaurant, retail store, and all other employers are cov ered by this legislation if they hire an employee in connection with their business or professional service. Workers who are now 65 years or more of age are also covered by the law if they work at a com mercial, industrial, or professional service employment. An amend ment bringing these older workers under the Federal law was made retroactive to January 1, 1939. Persons attaining age 65 who apply for old-age insurance are required to file satisfactory proof of age. If there is a public record of one’s age, the Social Security Board requires that that state ment be filed. A certificate of in fant baptism, certified to by the custodian of the church records, will also be accepted. If neither of these proofs of age is available, the Board will con sider other proofs of age such as a discharge from the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps, a statement on an insurance policy, a marriage certificate, or other public record. If you are nearing age 65 r *d contemplate filing an applicp i m for old-age insurance withir a few months or a year, the S ? al Security Board will be glad to -H- vise you what you should d i get satisfactory proof of your a c. If your wife is 65, she will be - 7- titled to one-half the amount f your insiyrance payment. If ) ss than 65, she will receive that t- mount when she attains that .ige and files her claim. The Social Security Board ''as prepared a series of pamphlets de scribing the benefits available to workers employed at jobs covered by this law. Copies of these pam phlets may be obtained by writing to the Social Security Board, 5021 Hodges Building, Greenwood, S.
