The United States Maritime Commission has announced an examination for Deck and En gineer Cadets in the Merchant Marine of the United States. The Fluid Drive unit takes the place of the engine fly wheel and consists of only two working parts—two bowl-shaped shells into which vanes or fins are welded. One shell is mounted on the engine crankshaft, the other on the drive shaft. Both shells, which do not touch each other, are enclosed in a sealed housing filled with oil. “It is this oil which, set in motion by the turning of the for ward shell, passes the power rota tions to the rear shell and the drive shaft. “Simple as the Fluid Drive mechanism is, the different driv ing results it produces are exceed ingly interesting. You can climb a hill at speeds as slow as a mile an hour with gears in ‘high’ and the car will keep going smoothly without straining the engine or any other mechanism. “You can also stop the Fluid Drive car, leaving the transmission in ‘high,’ without stalling the en gine. You can start in ‘high’ without bucking, and drive all day, at any desired speed, slow or fast, without having to bother about shifting gears. Such an arrangement has al ready been made by several sys tems in the state, the association president pointed out, in suggest ing extension of this plan throughout South Carolina. “The positions of employes call ed into military service are being protected by the federal govern ment, where it has jurisdiction,” Mr. Crow said, “and I believe a similar arrangement is desirable for South Carolina teachers.” The education president, head of an organization of 9,900 mem bers, said it seemed just that any loss of salarv realized bv teachers called to military duty should be anticipated and cared for. “Associates of these men would have the honor of participating in the national defense by making up the pay differential through sharing infinitesimal portions of their professional salaries,” Mr. Crow suggested. “I feel sure this suggestion would meet with universal ap proval among our teachers, all of whom keenly feel their responsi bility for exerting every effort toward the national defense,” he stated. Mr. Crow estimated that of the 1,800 men teachers, principals and superintendents in the state, more than 100 are liable for call to duty with reserves and national guard.
