AAA Payments
For Commercial
Orchardists
WINS BY LARGE MAJORITY
.Clemson, Aug. 17.—For a good
many years many of the orchard
ists in South Carolina have adopt
ed good soil-building practices,
such as the growing of cover crops,
the application of limestone, basic
slag, etc., yet these practices are
not universally adopted, says E. H
Rawl, extension horticulturist.
Reminding that th£ Agricultural
Adjustment Administration pro
gram during recent years has
aided and greatly encouraged
many commercial orchardists to
carry out these desirable practices,
Mr. Rawl points out that the AAA
is again' providing cash assistance
to help fruit growers carry out
adaptable orchard practices.
Listed below are soil-building
practice units for which will be
paid $1.50 each. * ,
1. 500 pounds of basic slag used
in connection with the seeding of
winter legumes, lespedeza, crotala-
ria, or annual rye grass.
2. 300 pounds of 16 per cent
superphosphate or its equivalent
used in connection with the seed
ing of winter legumes, lespedeza,
crotalaria, or annual rye grass.
3. Construction of 200 linear feet
of standard terrace with proper
outlets. I
4. Application of 1000 pounds of
ground limestone.
5. Seeding of one acre of winter
legumes.
6. One acre of good growth of
green manure crops or cover crops
left on the land as a temporary
mulch or plowed or disced under.
7. One acre of good growth of
summer growing non-legumes in
orchards left on the land or
plowed or disced under.
8. (Two-thirds of a soil-building
practice unit.) Seeding one acre
of annual lespedeza, not less than
20 pounds per acre, or lespedeza
sericea, not less than 30 pounds
per acre.
The individual orchardist should
select the practice or practices
most desirable for his particular
orchard, Mr. Rawl advises.
