THE DECLINE OF THE CITIES
It is of more than passing inter
est to note that the growth of
large cities in the United States
has been definitely checked.
Either people are moving away
from the cities or fewer are mov
ing to them. Census figures so
far compiled and reported show
that the total increase in popula
tion in more than 100 cities is
less than 5 per cent in the past-
ten years. The same cities grew
nearly 25 per cent in population
in the preceding ten year period.
New York’s count this year
showed -a 400,000 increase over
1930, but Chicago gained only
8,000 and Philadelphia actually
lost 15,000 people. St. Louis and
Pittsburgh also counted fewer
heads. Detroit and Baltimore
'have gained population, but no
where near so rapidly as before.
There is little doubt that the
cause of the decline of the big
cities is due to the automobile and
the better highways leading to the
.smaller towns and suburbs. When
the figures are all in we shall
doubtless see a great increase in
the size of the “satellite” commu
nities within easy motoring dis
tance of the bigger communities.
Comparatively few peoole live in
the large cities from choice; they
are forced by necessity ,to live
dose to their work. Those who
can live in a suburb and motor to
and from town do so.
There are no complete figures
of the*farm population as of 1940
yet available. It seems doubtful
that they will shpw any great in
crease. The tendency for many
years has been the other way.
But there is no indication, so far,
of material decline in the strictly
rural towns which depend largely
upon the farming regions for their
business. The automobile has
greatly enlarged the trading area
of such communities. They are
the most substantial of all. Ameri
can institutions.
T. W. Morgan Returns
To Extension Service
Clemson, July 22.—After a year’s
leave of absence for advanced
study, Thos. W. Morgan has re
turned to the Extension Service at
Clemson as assistant director, ac
cording to announcement by Di
rector D. W. Watkins.
Mr. Morgan spent the past year
at the University of Wisconsin
where he completed work for his
master’s degree in agricultural
economics with major work in
land economics. His appointment
to serve as assistant director was
authorized at the spring meeting
of the board of trustees to take
effect upon his return.
Mr. Morgan, who is a graduate
of Clemson College, has had
varied experience. He taught vo
cational agriculture two years in
Orangeburg, 1922 to 1924; was
county agent in McCormick coun
ty until 1931 when he was trans
ferred to Aiken where he served
as county agent for four years.
He was then for several months
acting district agent for the Aiken
district in the absence of District
Agent A. H. Ward. Since 1935 he
has been assistant to the exten
sion director with headquarters at
Clemson.
ment of the College and the Ex
periment Station, and Dr. G. H.
Wise and Dr. G. W. Anderson of
the Experiment Station staff.
Information about the program
and about the arrangements for
taking care of those who attend
the conference can be obtained
from county agents and agricul
tural teachers. Lodging in the
college dormitories will be free
and meals will be at reasonable
prices, it is stated.

Making Plans Ready
I?or Dairy Conference
Clemson, July 22.—A program
for the dairy conference to be
held at Clemson August 7-9 has
been worked out on the theme of
successful dairy farm manage
ment, says C. G. Cushman, exten
sion dairy specialist. This pro
gram is being sent to county farm
agents and teachers of agriculture
who will make plans for interest
ed groups of farmers to attend
the conference.
Besides the general program of
discussions and demonstrations on
feeding, management, and disease
problems and on the status of the
dairy industry in South Carolina,
special provision has been made
for a meeting of the South Caro
lina Jersey Cattle Club Friday,
August 9, and for a demonstration
in classification of Jersey cattle
and a judging contest that day.
Cooperating with Mr. Cushman
in planning and conducting the
conference are Prof. J. P. La-
Master, head of the Dairy Depart-
Derris Or Cube
Control For
Harlequin Bugs
A new control for harlequin
bugs, which have long been pests
of cabbage, collards, and turnips
in the South, is suggested by
County Agent D. Austin Shelley.
This new control is derris or cube
dust or spray which may be used
effectively to protect these three
foods so essential in a live-at-
home program.
Both the adult and immature
stages of the harlequin bug are
sucking and they cannot be
poisoned with any of tho arseni-
[cals, the county agent explains.
Hence the value of the new
remedy.
For dusting he advises a mix
ture containing at least three-
fourths of one per cent rotenone.
Since many South Carolina gar
deners now have this material on
hand for bean beetle control they
will find it comparatively easy to
give it a trial on the harlequin
bug. The first application should
be made when the first bugs ap
pear and treatments repeated as
frequently as necessary.
A special caution which the
county agent gives against the
harlequin bug is that all host
plants from which the crop has
been harvested should now be de
stroyed by turning under and as
soon as an infestation is noted on
the fall crop handpicking should
be practiced.
The same dust should prove ef
fective, the agent states, against
the cabbage webworm, which is
frequently a fall pest of collards
and turnips.

It is a significant fact that more truck users
choose Chevrolet than any other make of truck
. . . because Chevrolet trucks could not have
established their record of leadership in 1940 and
maintained it for six out of the last eight years
had it not been that Chevrolet trucks deliver
more dollar-for-dollar value than any other make.
All models and types of Chevrolet trucks may
still be purchased at today’s low price levels, so it
would be wise to consider replacing some of your
trucking equipment with new Chevrolets now.
