CONCERNING PURPOSES OF IN
DUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION FOR
NATIONAL DEFENSE
Clinton, June 22.—Dr. William P.
, T acobs, president of Presbyterian
College, who was this , week ap
pointed Chairman for the South
Carolina committee on Industrial
organization for national defense,
by Governor Burnet R. Maybank,
today gave an answer to the many
questions that have been directed
to him concerning the purposes of
the committee.
As chairman of the South Caro
lina committee, Dr. Jacobs is a
member of the Southwide commit
tee for the purpose of developing
facts and useable information a-
bout the Southern states for the
War Department in regards to the
national defense program.
Today Dr. Jacobs received a
statement from Mr. R. G. Gould,
^ho is chairman of the Southwide
Committee, on the objectives and
work of the entire Southwide pro
gram, which includes the states of
Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ten
nessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mis
sissippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida,
South Carolina, North Carolina,
Virginia, West Virginia, Missouri,
and Maryland.
The statement is; “At a meeting
of 300 industrialists from all parts
of the South called by Governor
Rivers of Georgia, chairman of
the Southern Governors’ Confer
ence, a committee was authorized
to assist the War Department in
mobilizing the material resources
'l the South for national defense.
Mr. R. L. Gould, Treasurer of the
Manufacturers Record, was ap
pointed Chairman of the South
wide Committee itself is to be
comprised of industrialists, repre-
' 'mtatives of labor, agriculture and
civic development groups—one
irom each of the 16 Southern
states appointed by the Governor
f'f. each state. These members of
the Southwide Committee in turn
' U1 organize state committees, of
which they will be chairman, for
the purpose of developing facts
and useable information about
'heir respective states for the War
department and manufacturers of
the country. These facts and data
will be assembled and correlated
v the Southwide Committee
through the Manufacturers Rec
ord, which in turn will act as Ha-
ron between the War Department,
^e industrial development groups
of the South, and manufacturers
-nd capitalists located all over the
country.
“One of the primary objectives
» f the Committee will be to make
available for War Department use
information about the South and
^ch part of the South as far as
existing plant facilities, raw ma
terials and minerals, labor, power
and transportation are concerned/
s needed and by so doing, avoid
a jam in Washington of countless i
individuals and individual agen
cies rushing to the Capital to pre-
ent a myriad of different propos
als at great expense of time and
effort and little practical gain. It
i*5 the Committee’s purpose to help
direct national defense activity in
the South along sound lines, so
that after the emergency is past,
ihe work already done for national
defense and the new plants lo
cated here will be used for the
permanent purpose of filling peace j
time needs, so that everything
done can be counted as a lasting
nvestment rather than merely j
temporary expenditures for de
fense.
“So, the authorization for the
work of the Committee at the June |
10 meeting in Atlanta carried with
it not only a greatly needed ser
vice for the South and the country
during the present emergency, but
also a permanent organization
working for the building of a
round industrial economy for the
Couth and its future prosperity.
Viie first meeting of the South
wide Committee will be held as
roon as all of the state Chairmen
have been appointed—probably
e arly in the week of June 24.”
A committee meeting will be
called by chairman Gould early
next week, and active work on the
program begun, Dr. Jacobs stated.
Presbyterian College feels hon
ored that its president has been
drafted for this valuable and im
portant state and national service.

Cars and trucks of McCormick
oounty are not being brought to
the Vehicle Inspection Station now
ocated in McCormick as readily
as had been hoped by the person
nel of the station. According to
William R. Bradford, Jr., super
visor, only 226 of McCormick
county’s 1124 vehicles have been
presented for inspection. However,
the percentage of approvals is
Mgh; 185 of this number receiving
stickers. The remaining 41 will
be approved when minor correc
tions are made. The inspection is
compulsory on all cars and trucks
that have not been issued the sec
ond period 1940 certificate of ap
proval.
Vehicle owners still have ample
time to get an inspection and have
any necessary adjustments made
before the station departs for Sa
luda July 18, but it is hoped bhey
MU not wait until the last few
days. Such a delay would cause a
rush both on the lane and in local
prarages. The station is in opera
tion from 8 a. m., till 5 p. ex
cept on Saturdays, the hours being
8 a. m., till 1 P- m.
