Why Lucky Horseshoes
There’s an amusing old legend
behind this superstition of horse
shoes being lucky. The story goes
that the devil once asked St. Dun-
stan, who was noted for his skill
in shoeing horses, to shoe his hoof.
Dunstan, recognizing his visitor,
tied him up tightly, and caused
the devil so much pain in the shoe
ing process that he yelled for
mercy.
At last Dunstan agreed to re
lease him on condition that he
would never again enter any place
where a horseshoe was displayed.
Hence the old custom of nailing
horseshoes up over the doors of
houses, stables, etc.
