New Circular Tells
Of Pecan Production
Clem son, June 8.—To give relia
ble information to help owners of
pecan trees procure better pro
duction of good nuts whether for
supplementary cash returns or for
home consumption, the Extension
Service of Clemson College has
issued a new publication, Circular
183, Pecan Production. The cir
cular, now ready for distribution,
may be bad free from county
agents or from the Publications
Department at Clemson.
Important factors contributing
to successful pecan production, ac
cording to E. H. Rawl, extension
horticulturist, and W. C. Nettles,
extension entomologist, who pre
pared the circular, include:
1. Suitable soils.
2. Thinning out of old plantings
where *the trees are now crowded.
3. The use of limestone to cor
rect soil acidity and to promote
satisfactory growth of cover crops.
4. Abundant supply of organic
matter which would involve the
growing of winter cover crops.
5. Clean and shallow summer
cultivation in bearing trees to per
mit the nuts to mature properly.
6. Proper fertilization.
7. tlse of zinc sulfate in the con
trol of tosette where rosette is a
problem.
8. Control of diseases and in- |
sects.
Suggestions on these and other j
matters are given in the new pub
lication.
Baptist School Of
Religious Education
At Hartsville July 1-6
DR. L. R. SCARBOROUGH
Dr. Lee Scarborough, Fort
Worth, Texas, president Southern
Baptist Convention is to be at
Coker College, Hartsville, S. C.,
July 1-6.
Doctor Scarborough has led
Southern Baptists during the
past few years in a great south
wide evangelistic campaign. He
is a great soul-winning Christian.
South Carolina Baptist ministers
are looking forward to his leader
ship in their conferences on evan
gelism at Coker July 1-6.
Other features of the School of
Religious Education are:
Baptist Woman’s Missionary
Union Classes and Conferences;
Baptist Training Union Classes
and Laboratories; Laboratory
School for Sunday school workers;
directed recreation and fun for
everybody.
Southern Baptist leaders of out
standing abUity and experience
are to lead the classes, conferences
and laboratories.
As an example of the fine pro
gram being offered the Laboratory
School for Sunday school workers
is typical. For the Beginner, Pri
mary, Junior and Intermediate de
partments there will be each day
beginning Tuesday morning,* July
2, at 10:00, a practice “Sunday
School.’’ Department worship pro
grams and classes will be con
ducted by these expert Sunday
school specialists, using the pupils
and equipment of the First Bap
tist Church of Hartsville. Depart
ment superintendents and teachers
will observe this work and during
the second hour of the 2-hour
period they will evaluate the ac
tivities just observed. Criticisms
and questions will be invited. In
the light of these criticisms plans
for the next day’s session of the
Sunday school will be made. After
five days of this practical instruc
tion superintendents and teachers
are prepared to do better teaching
in their own Sunday schools. A
large attendance is anticipated for
this advanced program of teacher
training. Rates are lowest for
adults in history of the Baptist
Summer Assembly, at only $6.25
plus $1.00 registration per person
for the entire week. A special
rate of $5.00 plus $1.00 registration
per person is made for pastors and
to delegations of 10 or more at
tending from one church.
Tenant Farmers
Problems
Too small acreage has seriously
handicapped many farmers who
are sincerely trying to make
comeback from a distressed posi
tion, Mr. E. Hanvey, Farm Security
Administration supervisor for Mc
Cormick County, believes.
Supervisor Hanvey said today
that the Farm Security Adminis
tration has discovered that farms
too small to support families have
largely contributed to the pas ;
failure of many farmers and that
limited acreages definitely handi
cap these farmers in their efforts
to attain rehabilitation.
“Since the FSA aims to help dis
tressed farmers learn how to stand
on their own feet, it is often nec
essary to help them get larger
farms when they receive rehabili
tation loans,” Mr. Hanvey added.
Otherwise their chances of
eventually becoming self-support
ing are balked at the beginning.
As a result of the FSA’s efforts
to assist farmers to obtain ade
quate acreage to make up an eco-

nomic unit, he said FSA borrowers
in McCormick County are now
operating 25 per cent more acreage
than they did before they came
under the rehabilitation program.
He added that the increased
acreage does not substantially in
crease the production of commer
cial crops, however, because the
produce is primarily for home con
sumption.
“When a farmer receives a re
habilitation loan, he gets it on
condition that he and his family
will carry out a plan of farm and
home management. These man
agement plans usually provide for
most of the family’s foodstuffs
being raised on the farm and for
canning summer produce for
winter use. The plans also pro
vide for raising enough feed for
the farm’s livestock.
“The increased acreage shows
that borrower families have made
progress toward the goal of self-
subsistence, and that they now
have a chance for a better diet,
improved health, and a higher
standard of living than they had
before.”
Mr. Hanvey said that McCor
mick County families have re
ceived assistance since 1935, when
the rural rehabilitation program
began, and that there are now 142
holders of standard loans. He
pointed out that during the five-
year period, a number of families
have repaid their loans in full, al
though many of the loans will not
mature for another three or four
years.
Explaining that the Bankhead-
Jones Act extended the rehabilita
tion principle by enabling tenants,
sharecroppers, and farm laborers
to become landowners. Supervisor
Hanvey said that McCormick
County is one of the counties
designated under provisions of this
act for tenant purchase loans and
his office is now open for applica
tions and listing of farms.
Although only limited funds are
available for the tenant purchase
program this year Farm Security
Administration officials expect ap
proximately $8350.00 to be loaned
to 3 families in this vicinity for the
purchase of farms.
