louse products have been long ex
tant.
This a genus of the Iris Family,
having sword-like leaves and
spikes of funnel-shaped flowers.
Hybridizers have glorified the
flower by increasing its size many
times, adding new and varied
shapes and colors which have
combined to make the gladiolus
one of the most popular summer
cut or growing flowers.
The gladiolus corm that is plant
ed is not the one that is harvested,
for the old corm withers away
during the growing period and a
new one forms on top of it.
The maintenance of stock for
planting is accomplished by grow
ing on the small cormels that
form on the base of the old corms.
Sometimes several hundred of
these cormels are produced on a
single corm. They have a hard
shell and their germination is en
couraged by soaking them in water
several hours before planting.
They are planted in the same
manner as the large corms, except
that they require much less space;
in one, two or three years, depend
ing upon variety and cultivation
conditions, they will grow into
first class corms.
When gladioli are grown for cut
flowers the removal of any part of
the foliage with the spike, inter-
fers with the normal development
of the new corm. If two or three
of the broadest leaves at the base
of the plant are allowed to remain,
a fair crop of cormels may result,
but the best corm development can
only be realized if the whole plant
is left untouched.
After the blossoms wither the
spikes should be removed as the
development of a seed pod draws
heavily on the plant structure and
in time decreases the size of the
new corm.
Scab, hard rot, and dry rot are
common enemies of the gladioli.
The scab is widely distributed, ap
pearing as rusty red, brown or
purple spots on the lowest point
of the leaves. Infection is rapid
in warm weather and the plants
often fall over. Hard rot occurs
wherever gladioli are grown, the
corms first showing water-soaked,
reddish brown spots and later de
veloping in to hard, wrinkled
mummies. Sometimes the leaves
may be dwarfed and spotted at the
base, failing to produce blooms
and die prematurely. This is pro
duced by a fungus, which resides
in the ground. Two or more
species of Fusarium cause a rot
among corms and a yellowing of
the plants.
Corosive sublimate is very ef
fective for all of these troubles—
1 part to 1000 of water. Soak
corms in the solution from 30
minutes to two hours, drain them
well and plant immediately.
Thrips feeding on the young
flower buds results in distortion of
the blossoms. Submerging corms
for 1 hour in corresive sublimate
1-1000 will kill thrips also.
