So many of them set about try ing to make a plan or pattern to govern the lives of everybody. These earnest folk, usually young and not very well versed in the peculiarities of human nature, often call themselves “liberals” or “radicals.” As a matter of fact; they are really’ conservatives. They want to set up a completely ordered world in which nothing will ever be changed, once it is es tablished. ' The changes they propose in the American system are,, Indeed, radical departures from condi tions to which we are accustomed, but they are not radical in the true sense of going to the roots whatever is wrong with things ad they are. And they certainly are not liberal, for the essence of liberalism is the fullest tolerance of everybody's liberty to think as he pleases, act as he pleases and vote as he pleases, without com pulsion from any source. The true spirit of Americanism is that sort of liberalism. It is disorderly, in the sense that there is no fixed and p&changeable plan about it.
