Real reasons for growing a gar
den and eating fresh vegetables
lie in their mineral and ‘vitamin
values. We must have calcium
and phosphorus to build good
bones and teeth. Iron is on the
eauired list for the sake of good
red blood. Vitamins are' the
mysterious elements that stimu
late the body to use its building
materials. Vegetables can help to
supply the most essential minerals
and all but one of the six known
'itamins necessary for health and
growth.
Vitamin A helps to keep us in
good general condition at all ages.
If we don’t get a regular supply
we’re wide-open to certain infec
tions. Excellent vegetable sources
of Vitamin A are parsley, kale,
spinach, chard, turnip greens,
green lettuce, collards, broccoli,
mustard and beet greens, carrots,
sweet potatoes, yellow squash,
peppers, tomatoes, peas, and green
string beans. Good sources are
asparagus, okra, and Brussels
sprouts.
Vitamin B, sometimes called the
“appetite vitamin”, keeps up your
interest in food and keeps up the
ability of your muscles to handle
it. Without enough Vitamin B,
in the diet, we’re likely to lose
Interest in life, become generally
sluggish and irritable. No vegeta
ble ranks as an excellent source,
but the good vegetable sources
are collards, turnips greens, car
rots, sweet potatoes, spinach,
parsnips, cabbage, asparagus, peas,
mustard greens, kale, beet greens,
and okra.
Vitamin c aids in the fight a-
gainst scurvy. Not many people
in this country are likely to have
such an acute form of deficiency
ih Vitamin C, but many people do
lose appetite and weight and feel
fatigued, think they have rheu
matism, and visit the dentist
oftener than they think they
should have to. All these signs
point to lack of Vitamin C, which
is an element that must be sup
plied now every day, as it cannot
be stored in the body. Most peo
ple think of orange juice as the
one provider of Vitamin C, but a
double order of tomato juice will
do the same trick. Other excel
lent sources are parsley, collards,
turnip greens, cabbage, turnips,
Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, spin
ach, asparagus, peas, and radishes.
Vitamin E, the “anti-sterility”
vitamin, comes in sufficient a-
oiounts along with any diet which
re otherwise adequate in green
vegetables and whole grains.
Vitamin G, famous in the
study of pellagra, helps to keep
us well at all ages, prevents the
slowing-up of growth, loss of
weight, and too-early signs of old
age. Excellent sources among
vegetables are turnip tops and
beet tops and kale. Good sources
are spinach, collards, broccoli,
cabbage, carrots, cauliflower,
beets, and green lettuce. The
color sign aoplies to Vitamin G,
as well as Vitamin A.
The nutrition exoerts in the
Bureau of Home Economics say
that a rich green colored vege-
tabls is likely to be just about
twice as rich in Vitamin G as the
same vegetable bleached.
Iron is essential for health in
the development and maintenance
of good red blood, and the follow
ing vegetables are rated as excel
lent sources of iron: Beans—green
lima, beet greens, chard, collards,
kale, mustard greens, parsley,
parsnip, peas, spinach, turnip tops
or greens.
Calcium is essential to build
good bones and teeth, and the
following vegetables are excellent
sources of this element: Beet
greens, broccoli, cauliflower, col
lards. kale, mustard tops or
greens.
Suggestions
Prepare hotbeds for sowing seed
in January.
Make garden plans for the com
ing year, order seed catalogues.
Garden crops, such as beets,
carrots, parsnips, and salsify can
be left where grown and dug as
wanted. Fall beets and carrots
later in the season should have a
light furrow thrown over the
beds, since those crops are some
what tender.
Make Plantings Of The Following:
Plant English peas of smooth,
round type for early spring crop.
If not enough cabbage plants
have been set to supply the early
spring needs, set them now. Be
sure to set them deep enough to
cover the entire stem.
Plant for succession: Cabbage,
kale, lettuce, onion, and spinach.
Strawberry, dewberry, raspberry,
and blackberry plants may be set
now, for home use.

Town Tax Ordinance
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE TOWN
COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF
McCORMICK, SOUTH CARO
LINA, IN COUNCIL ASSEM
BLED, AND BY AUTHORITY OF
THE SAME.
Section 1. That a tax of six)
mills of the assessed valuation of|
all real and personal property ly
ing within the corporate limits ofj
the town of McCormick, S. C., as
assessed for State and County
purposes is hereby levied and I
assessed to meet and defray the
current expenses of the Town of|
McCormick, S. C.. for the fiscal
year beginning October 1st, 1939.
The said taxes shall be due and
payable at the office of the Town
Clerk on the first day of October,
1939.
Section 2. That in addition to
the above Ifevy of six mills, for j
current expenses as provided in
section one of this Ordinance, a
levy of thirty eight mills (38) is
hereby- made upon the real and
personal property lying within the
corporate limits of the town of
McCormick. The same is hereby
levied for the purpose of paying
interest on bonds and to retire
bonds of the town of McCormick.
Section 3. That the Clerk and
Treasurer shall enter said levies
and assessments upon the books
of the said Town of McCormick
and receive said taxes, that the
said taxes shall be paid to the
Clerk and Treasurer in lawful
money of the United States on or
before the first day January, 1940
Section 4. That on all taxes and
assessments, or any portion there
of, charged against any property
or party on the duplicate for the
fiscal current year and due the
Town of McCormick, S. C„ that
shall not be paid on or before the
first day of January, 1940, the
Town Clerk shall ada a penalty of
5% on the Town duplicate and
