EM- ’ McCORMICK MESSENGER, McCOkMICK, SOUTH CAROtiNA Thursday; October S, 1939 McCORMICK MESSENGER l Poblished Every Thursday H Established Jane 5, 19M j EDMOND J. McCRACKEN, Editor and Owner patared ut the Post Office at Me* tfV- m! li, S. C., as mail matter of Me second class. < EUBSCKIPTION RATES: ! One Year $1.00 BIx Months .75 Three Months .50 Fight Screwworms Protect Livestock Recent outbreak of screwworms in different parts of the state and the experiences of the last five years indicate that screwworms ~'ov rather serious fall pests of livestock, in McCormick County, .says county Agent D. Austin Shel ley, reminding animal owners that certain practices are effective in reducing screwworai losses to a minimum. Since they first appeared in 1934 screwworms have been more or less abundant in this state each fall, the indications being that they do not survive the winters here but spread from more south ern points. For prevention and control of screwworms the agent suggests: 1. Treat all injuries with pine tar oil. 2. Delay all operations such as dehorning and castrating wherever possible until cold weather. 3. Keep a careful watch on all animals for screwworm infesta tions and apply benzol as maggots are found. Wounds found to be infested with maggots should be swabbed out with clean cotton, benzol applied, the wound plugged so that the vaoers from the chem ical will kill the maggots, and the area around the wouiid treated with pine tar oil. Benzol and pine tar oil are now generally available. Scientists of the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture, Mr. Shelley states, have recently found that diphenylamine is very effective for treating wounds of livestock to prevent infestation and for treat ing wounds already infested with maggots. As this material be comes available, doubtless South Carolina farmers will use it. Quick, Satisfactory ODORLESS DRY CLEANING SERVICE % Work Done While You Shop GET THE BEST Avoid Disappointment.
