Clemson, May 29.—The com
mercial crop of peaches from the
Southern states for 1939 will be
much smaller than the 1938 crop
and even smaller than the 10-year
average, 1928-1937, says E. H.
Rawl, extension horticulturist, cit
ing the May estimates of the Crop
Reporting Board, U. S. Bureau of
Agricultural Economics.
The May 1 condition of the en
tire peach crop, according to the
report, was, for South Carolina, 64
per cent compared with 70 per
cent in 1938; for North Carolina
41 per cent compared with 76 per
cent; for Georgia, 60 per cent
compared with 69 per cent. The
condition of the crop in the
Southern states as a whole de
clined 13 points from that of April
1, largely as a result of low tem
peratures during the first half of
April.
South Carolina’s production in
1938 was the equivalent of 3,000
cars. While the condition of the
South Carolina crop is not quite
so good as it was in 1938, many
orchards are now coming into
rearing and the total commercial
production in the state will proba
bly equal or exceed the 1938 pro
duction if conditions are favorable
for the development and sizing of
the fruit.
