Employers needing workers to help them have only to tele phone their needs to the nearest office and the requested number of qualified persons will soon be on their way to the vacant Jobs. In March, the last month for which complete statewide figures are available, the service made 3,161 placements, 1,140 of them with private employers. A total of 1,023 items were made on sewing and handicraft projects, including a large number of cloth ing articles, sheets, bed spreads, toys and rugs that were dis tributed free of charge to needy families. NYA canneries, instituted as a community service for citizens generally desiring s®me of their foodstuffs preserved, filled 524 containers. Bannister. txt > 45,050 Payments During April the South Carolina unemployment compensation com mission received 61,242 claims for benefits, made 45,050 job insur ance ' payments embracing $217,- 941.44, and collected $383,720.29 in contributions, a statement issued today by the department revealed. From July, when the law be came fully operative, through April, the department had paid $1,388,574.80 in benefits. The max imum weekly benefit payable under the law is $15. Payments are now averaging $5.16.
