S Denartment cf Labor announced today. “The Health of the ChiM Ls <-he Power of the Nation” will be the Child Health Day slogan for 1939. First used during the Children’s v’ear campaign, the slogan is par ticularly aopropriate this year, pnreau officials point out, because 1939 will also be a year n f national jct/^t-taking in the field of child health and welfare. This will mark the fourth con secutive vear that the Children’s Bu r eau at the reouest cf the State and Provincial Health Authorities of North America has sponsored the annual eelebratiem of Mav Dav as Child Health Dav. first «sncr<Tr»sted b'7 a former Chief of the Children’s Bureau and carried on for many years by the American Cbilrt Health Association until its dissolution in 1935. On the very eve of Mav Dav- Ohild Health Day. President Roosevelt has called the first meeting of the Planning Com mittee of a White House Confer ence on Children in a Democracy. This Conference will be at work during the balance of the year and will close early in 1940. Local communities will stress their own problems in the field of child health on May 1, 1939, but special emphasis will be given to problems of nutrition, the Bureau says. In preparation for May Day the Children’s Bureau has sug gested that local communities sur vey what they are doing to pro mote good nutrition of mothers and children. The U. S. Bureau of the Census has estimated that there were 35,000,000 children under 15 years of age in the United States in 1935, and that the number of persons under 21 totaled around 49,000,000. The extension of maternal and child-health services in the States lias placed the United States in a better position to promote child health, and the recent reductions In maternal and infant mortality show that definite advances- can be made. txt Southeastern Guernsey Sale Columbia, May 1 May 1, according to announce ment of C. G. Cushman, dairy specialist of the Clemson College Extension Service. This South eastern sale takes the place this year of the South Carolina Guern sey sale which has been held an nually for 16 vears, Cushman says. X Future Farmers Have A Fish Supper Thursday, April 13, most of the members of the McCormick F.F.A Chapter, Mr. Sprawls, and Mr ■^ornig entertained themselves vith a fish fry cn the Savannah Aver. Everyone attending enjoyed ishing (without any bites) during the late afternoon. The supper “Fit for a farmer vas under the supervision of Billy Hanvey, was prepared by every person attending. All in all, a grand time was had by those oresent. After feasting, a big camp fire was built, and everyone added to the gossip until eleven o’clock. We are hoping to have another outing in the near future. xx- Civil Service Exami nation Announced For Card-Punch * » % • : m Operator A Southeastern Guernsey sale will be held at the State Fair Grounds in Columbia Monday, The United States Civil Service Commission has announced an open competitive examination for the position of alphabetic card- punch operator, $1,260 a year. Ap plicants will be accepted not later than May 15 if received from States east of Colorado, and not later than May 18 if received from Colorado and States westward. Applicants must have had at least 2 months of full-time paid experience in operating card- punch machines. They must have reached,, tbeir 18th but must not have ^assecP their 53d birthday.
