Where the top layer is treated with a large quantity of lime it has a tendency to bake and flake up when the plants begin to grow. You should use one pound of hydrated or builder’s lime for each square foot of bedding space. Ap ply one inch of lime treated soil under the potatoes then cover the potatoes with lime treated soil to a depth of one inch. The remain ing two inches of soil applied over the potatoes should be untreated. Should you decide to treat more than two inches of depth per square foot use an additional pound of lime for each additional two inches of depth per square foot. D. Austin Shelley, County Agent. Oklahoma democrat, gifted orator and World War Veteran, will be the featured sneaker at the an nual convention of the South Carolina Education Association in Columbia, March 22-24. J P. Coates, Association secre tary, said that Senator Lee. highly regarded in the West and East for his prowess as an orator, would be heard at the last general meeting of the convention, which will start at noon on the last day of the conclave—Friday, March 24. Senator Lee is 46 years old and lives at Norman. Oklahoma. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, receiving a B. A. de gree from that institution in 1017 after having snecialized in English and history. He served as an in- j fantry private during the World war, and upon his return, was made head of the public speaking department at his alma, mater. He held that oosition until he vas elected to the national house of representatives in 1933. He was ~’ected to the United States senate :n 1936. Senator Lee also holds .an M. A. degree in political science from Columbia University, New York City, and an LL. B. degree from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn. The convention of the South Carolina Education Association will open at 6:30 p. m., Wednes day, March 22, with a banquet program. Nominations will be made that night for officers of the Association for 1939-40 and balloting on the nominees will take place the following day from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. Departmental and general sessions will be held the second and third • days— Thursday and Friday, March 23 and 24. E. W. Rushton, superintendent of Batesburg-Leesville schools, is president of the Association, which includes nearly 10,000 teachers, principals, superintendents and college professors. Vice-President is W. F. Loggins, assistant super intendent of Greenville City Schools.
