A. H. McCain Quali fied As A Second Class Gunner Charleston, S. C., Dec. 3.—Spe cial:—Announcement has been made by the Department of Mili tary Science and Tactics at The Cits del, the Military College of South Carolina, that Cadet Tech nical Sergeant A. H. McCain of McCormick has qualified as a second class gunner. Gunner’s medals are awarded on the basis of the work done during the previous year on coast artillery subjects. A thorough knowledge of both seacoast and anti-craft gunnery is required for qualification. Cadet McCain is a member of the junior class at The Citadel and is majoring in chemistry. He is assigned to the regimental staff * as Cadet Intelligence Sergeant. Chevrolet- November Sales Detroit, Dec. 9.—Chevrolet deal ers sold 76,938 new cars and trucks at retail during the month of November, W. E. Heller, general sales manager, announced here today. This is an increase of 4,- 455 units over sales for the same month in 1937, Mr. Holler said. The last 10 days of the month Chevrolet’s figures indicate, look ed particularly good in compari son with the corresponding period last year. Sales in that period were 25,045, as against 20,310 in the final 10 days of November 1937. Almost 3 1-2 million men, women, and children have died of tuberculosis in the United States during the last thirty years. An additional 2 1-2 million would have died during that time if the mortality rate of thirty years ago had continued to prevail. The annual death toll from tuberculosis in the United ' States would be 250,000 if the death rate of the early 1900’s still prevailed. Under present mortality condi tions the annual death toll is about 70,000. Today tuberculosis is responsible for the death of one individual every seven and one third min utes. Thirty years ago deaths oc curred at the rate of one every three and one-half minutes. Two-thirds of all the deaths from tuberculosis occur before the age of 45. Considerably more than half of all the deaths from tuberculosis occur during the important pro ductive years of life—between 15 and 45. The tuberculosis death rate of girls and young women between the ages of 15 and 25 is one and one-half times that of boys and young men of the same ages. Thirty years ago tuberculosis was responsible for 11 out of every hundred deaths occuring in the United States. Today it is respon sible for five out of every hundred deaths. Tuberculosis is responsible for the death of about 4,000 children under 15 years of age in the United States each year. The tuberculosis mortality rate is now approximately 55 per 100,- 000 of the population; in the early 1900’s it was close to 20p. It has been forced gradually into this position since 1912 up to which time it had been the first cause of death. There are estimated to be more than 500,000 active cases of tuber culosis in the United States. There are 95,000 beds for the treatment of tuberculosis in the United States. There are 1500 tuberculosis as sociations and 1200 smaller com mittees affiliated with the Nation al Tuberculosis Association in the United States. The sale of Christmas Seals furnishes the funds used in the campaign against tuberculosis in about forty other countries, as well as in the United States. Although this is the 32nd an nual sale of Christmas Seals, col lectors must have 36 designs for a complete set, as there were two designs in 1907 and four in 1913. 1938 is the 32nd year in which Christmas Seals have been sold in this country. The first Christmas Seal sale was held in Denmark in 1904, the result of an inspiration of Einar Holboell, a postal clerk. Miss Emily P. Bissell conducted the first Christmas Seal sale in the United States at Wilmington, Delewarc, in 1907. How to prevent tuberculosis is a part of the campaign financed by the annual sale of Christmas Seals. Dr. Robert Koch, a German physician, announced the dis covery of the germ which causes tuberculosis (the tubercle bacillus) in 1882.
