C., to Visit in the | j home of her brother, Mr. D. P. McCain, and Mrs. McCain. Mrs. McCain continues critically ill. Mr. and Mrs. D. M. McGrath and Mr. J. T. McGrath attended the funeral of their cousin, Mr. R. C. Williams, in Augusta Tues day afternoon. Miss Marian Harmon left Satur day for Lyons, Ga., where she has accepted a position as teacher of the 2nd grade in the city schools. Mr. R. E. Coleman of near Plum Branch was a visitor here Tuesday. Mrs. W. J. Talbert, who has been ill at her home here the past ten I days, is considerably better at this time and expects to be up and about again within the next few ‘days. Mrs. Talbert’s sister, Mrs. Mary Wash, of Cleora, arrived Tuesday to spend some time with her. MULES AND MARES » . Fuller of Greenwood were guests of Mrs. T. E. Fuller here one day the past week. Mr. and Mrs. James E. Talbert 1 spent the past week end with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. | P. Talbert, of the Rehoboth com munity. Among those from here attend ing the inauguration of Governor i Burnet R. Maybank in Columbia (Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Strom, Mrs. C. K. Epting, Mrs. J. J. Dorn, Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Brown, Mr. J. W. Corley and Mr. E. P. Bentley. Miss Irene Fuller of Greenwood is spending some time here as guest of Mrs. T. E. Fuller. C. Phone No. 73. The three major destroyers of the nation’s forests—fire, insects, and disease—have encountered a conquering army in the “shock troops” of the CCC. Enrolees have soent 4,000,000 man-days of labor fighting forest fires during five years of service. They have j built many thousands of miles of firebreaks throughout the pine stands of the southern states, and they have proved of inestimable benefit in holding fire losses to a first-rate minimum. The war waged by the CCC a- gainst the silent tree killers, such as disease, insects, and fungi, has aided the country in keeping the national forests in a healthy growing condition. Although less dramatic and spectacular than fire-fighting, the protection of the forests against these menaces is as important as the protection | against fire and requires the ster ling qualities of patience and hard work. The improvement program of the CCC has made an important contribution to the forest wealth of the country, especially in the South, where large areas of land have been acquired and added to the national forests. These lands had been heavily logged and sub jected to severe burning, and the CCC work program is helping to restore them. A dual accomplish ment can also be recorded in that the CCC has not only built forests, but it has also built men. A series of publications are be ing prepared by the Government Printing Office on CCC activities. Two of these booklets, entitled “Forests Protected by the CCC” and “Forest Improvements by the CCC”, may be secured free of ^har«Te by addressing a request to the Regional Forester, U. S.
