Experience has shown that it is not safe to put into anybodv’s veins the blood of anyone else who hapoens to be willing to come to the aid of the sufferer. Not only must the doctors be certain that the blood so given is free from any contamination by di sease or heredity, but it must be of the same structural composi tion or “type” as that of the re cipient. In emergencies, as when the victim of any accident is bleeding to death, there is no time to make the elaborate tests necessary, even though there may happen to be someone among the bystanders who is willing to give a few ounces of blood to save the life of another. The large hospitals have lists of “blood donors” who can be called upon in emergen cies, and so are able to save many lives which would otherwise be lost, To make such a service avail able to physicians and hospitals everywhere is the latest service being initiated bv the American Red Cross. Local chapters which are willing to do so and have the cooperation of their community physicians, take the responsibility for enrolling volunteer donors who are willing to give blood without fee for indigent or semi- fndlgent parties as well as in emergencies. Following the example of the British and other European Red Cross associations, several Ameri can, chapters have already started such a service. * This seems like a peculiarly ap propriate extension of the wide philanthropic functions of the Red C Cross. -XX- Mrector Watkins On Changing Agriculture In South Carolina and poultry all constitute impor tant phases of the livestock pro gram. People in this state at last realize that none of these types of livestock can be success fully produced for cash income purposes except through the b iilding of permanent ana tem porary pastures and the growing of forage, hay, anct grain crops on the farm for the livestock. Live stock programs, therefore, are now underway with these fundamen tals first in mind, and, where they are not kept to the forefront, we advise would-be livestock farmers to do something else. “It would be a fine thing from a strictly state standpoint if the business interests around the cit ies such as Columbia, Spartanburg and Greenville, could in some way give special consideration to the purchase, use, or consumption by their respective populations of lo cally grown farm products. Money thus would be kept in the trade territory of the city and spent over and over in the up-building of that community.” South Carolina Crop Production, 1938 Clemson, Jan. 7.—“The present outlook for future prices of cot ton gives us a rather gloomy im pression of the future of those farmers who continue to depend entirely on cotton to produce the necessary cash for living”, says D. W. Watksnis, director of the Ex tension Service of Clemson Col lege, in a New Year message to fanners and other citizens on ag ricultural conditions in the state. “Other sources of income must be developed and are being de veloped”, he states. “Because the individual cases are not spectacu lar, many of us lose sight of the total change being made and vis ible when we look at state-wide figures. The changes that are taking place in our agriculture to day are much greater than is ccNDShibnly thought. With these changes coming, the Extension Service is especially interested in developing additional sources of income on cotton farms. Income may either be in the form of cash or better farm living. "Illustrating the work of the Extension Service in developing crops to produce income, I mention sweet betatoes and syrup. Sev eral years ago we sent a truck to the Government Experiment Sta tion at Tifton, Georgia, and brought in a load of sugarcane of varieties which are disease-resis tant. We look forward to the creation of a cash crop from sugar cane and sorghum. We brought in good seed sweet potatoes a few A review of South Carolina crop production in 1938 shows record crops of wheat, oats, and sweet potatoes, r-d the largest corn crop since 1923, but the smallest cotton crop in sixteen years, ac cording to report issued by Frank O. Black, agricultural statistician, Columbia, December 29th. Aggregate production during the year was 6 per cent below to tal outturn in 1937 but 18 per ^ent above average for the years 1927-36—the decline from last year being principally due to a re duction of 36 per cent in cotton production. Yield per acre comparisons are similar t# production—slightly be low 1937 but above average. Due mostly to acreage expansion, production of food and feed crops was 3 per cent above last year and 31 per cent above the 10-year (1927-36) average. Production of 15 commercial truck crops was 8 per cent above ’ast year and 14 per cent above average. Outturn was larger this year than last for com, wheat, oats, sweet potatoes, peanuts, sorghum sirup, soybeans, peaches and pears, but smaller for rye, Irish potatoes, tobacco, tame hay, cot- on, cowpeas and pecans. Crops were harvested from ap- moximately 4,982,000 acres this ihg a decrease of 9 per cent each. Commercial truck acreage was about the same as last year but 16 per cent above average. The December 1 COTTON esti mate of 650,000 bales will stand until final revisions next May. This would be the second smallest crop in 45 years—the low produc tion being due mostly to acreage reduction but in part to a yield per acre lower than that of recent years. Assuming 85 pounds of seed for each 35 pounds of lint, 289,000 tons of COTTONSEED were made. This compares with 455,000 tons in 1937 and 354,000 tons average for the years 1927-36. A CORN crop of 26,767,000'bush els—the largest since 1923—is due mostly to acreage increases in recent years but partly to above- average yield per acre. The WHEAT crop of 1,771,000 bushels is the largest ever made in the State altho the crop of 1935 closely approximated this figure. The 161,000 acres har vested is the third largest of re cent years. A crop of 10,648,000 bushels of OATS is the State’s largest pro duction altho only one per cent larger than the 1936 crop. There has been a gradual increase in oats acreage during the past ten years and the 467,000 acres har vested exceeds that of any previ ous year altho not greatly above the acreage of recent years. The TOBACCO estimate of 98,- 430,000 pounds harvested from 102,000 acres is 9 per cent below last year in both production and acreage but well above average. TAME HAY acreage was 9 per cent less and yield per acre 6 per cent off so the crop of 431,000 tons is 14 per cent below produc tion in 1937 altho 39 per cent a- bove average. SWEET POTATO production of 6,468,000 bushels is a record crop altho the 66,000 acres harvested has been exceeded in a number of previous years. Improved va rieties and better cultivation have enhanced quality and increased yield per acre in recent years and a larger percentage of the crop is being marketed. The PEANUT estimate of 9,100,- 000 pounds is 13 per cent above 1937 and 7 per cent above average. The PECAN estimate of 1,000,000 pounds is slightly below last year but considerably above average. S. and world carry-over of cotton, •■he most constructive sugeestions for improvement in the situation ^eem to be: (1) New uses for cot ton: Improvement of the U. S. cron through the use of better '’ped with improved staple; (3) The production of larger yields per acre with lower costs per pound through the use of legumes the to to ticu and more ade quate fertilization with better balanced fertilizers: (4) Two cash crops on every farm instead of one: and (5) Enough food and feed crons on every farm so as to make cotton a cash crop in fact as well as in theory. This program naturally calls for a reduction in the acreage of Ze Tzr 1 fw Peci ?i Iy on the poorer soils. With cotton, rust and wilt are two of the chief factors that bring ^feased yields and poor 15 a fungous disease, which clogs up the circulatory passages of the plant and turns the pith black, while cotton rust is simply potash hunger. To con trol rust farmers are using 8 per $ ei Vm P 0 * 3 "®* 1 in their complete fertilizer at planting plus 50 to 100 pounds of Muriate of Potash per acre, or its equivalent in Kainit. as a top-dresser, depending upon the amount of rust present in the fields in previous years. Extra potash will also help to control wilt but wilt-resistant seed ' are necessary to fully control the di sease and produce maximum yields. On many fields farmers find, also that pure bred seed purchased direct from the breeder “run-out”, quickly unless a high potash fertilizer is used. Today, farmers, fertilizer men ^nd scientists are paying a great deal more attention to plant food deficiency symptoms as they oc cur in the fields than ever before. For instance, the firing of corn blades on the tip and along the margins is direct evidence that the crop has not received suffi- i cient potash. If the green of the I leaf fades prematurely as the crops reach maturity, and there: are yellow parallel streaks length- | wise the blade, the plant food deficiency is magnesium. And so we march by progressive steps to the goal of better fertilized crops, from a standpoint both of yields and quality. txt Keep A Keen Eye On Laying Pullets If the poultry flock owner wants to make his laying pullets most i profitable, he must keep an eye on them from the time they are put in the laying house until the whole flock comes into production, I County Agent R.
