SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year $1.00 6bc Months .75 Three Months .50 Typical 4-H Records That Spell Success Cleihson, Nov. 20.—Echoes of progress and profit in 4-H work for 1937 are coming from all parts of the state as records and reports are being made or} the year’s demon strations. Some little success stories which show the value of 4-H en deavor are cited by Dan Lewis, state boys’ club agent. Robert McNair, 4-H beef club- ster of Clarendon county, bought a 360-pound heifer and put it on feed July 3 6. From that time until Oct. 22 she made a gain of 210 pounds, almost three pounds per day. This calf sold for $8.80 per hundred, which gave Robert a fair price for feed. Dillon county’s 33 corn club boys made an average of 38.3 bushels on their 35 acres, more than double the average for the county. In Edgefield county David Smith’s 4-H corn plot shov/ed a yield of 81 bushels per acre, and this was closely followed by the 71-bushel yield of Yates Quarles. Twelve Jasper 4-H boys showed and sold 25 pigs at the State Fair. Twenty-three of these pigs were well cared for but the remaining two did not get proper attention. The result was that the 23 sold well and made money for the clubsters, while the two lost money, which showed the boys that merit is val uable. Vernon Fleming fitted, showed, and sold 11 of these pigs for $255.42, and won $42. in prize mo^ey. Marvin Floyd fed three and sold them for $78.20, plus $12 in prize money. Seven beef culb calves v/ere shown at the State Fair by Mc Cormick clubsters. The calves brought $400 at the auction sale, which netted the boys approxi mately $200. Interest is being shown by a number of club boys in this phase of livestock work, and five calves are already on feed for the stock show next spring. Three club calves fer Richland i 4-H members were financed through a local bank. The bank notes have been paid, and each boy has a few dollars profit and some goed experience and training. Britt is posted against hunting, or other forms of trespassing, of any kind unless such hunter can produce a written permit signed by A. K. Britt. Ga The fourth woman to serve the United States in a consular and diplomatic capacity is Miss Mar garet M. Hanna who has been appointed by the State Depart ment as American Consul at Gen eva, Switzerland. Miss Hanna, formerly of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been with the State Depart ment in Washington for forty-two years, starting in as a clerk. Among her duties have been service with the Venezuelan Claims Commission and with the Pan-American Ccn- i ferences at Buenos Aires in 1910, , at Santiago in 1923 and at Havana I in 1928. * * * Now York’s pnre horseshoer ‘s r. woman, Mrs. Martha Drew Smith, who learned her trade from her father in Dexter, Mich. Her has- band is a blacksmith and together they operate a successful establish ment in Greenwich Village. But they also go the length and breadth of Manhattan, shoeing dairy de livery wagon horses and supervis ing the work at riding academy stables. Mrs. Smith prefers to shoe big horses because little ones make her bend over. * * * It must have been exciting to those native fishermen who for the first time took a woman on their Norwegian whaling boat from the i ccast of Labrador. But Miss Ester Andersson, who began going to the Grenfel Missions in Labrador ten years ago, had that honor. It is a sixty-mile run out to the whaling grounds. People of Labrador now j grow their ov/n vegetables, which means better nourishment and bet ter health, according to Miss An- derssen, who is particularly in terested in this development be cause she is by training a nurse. * * * What is said to be the most com^ plets collection of biographies of famous women in history and to be found in New' York is owned by Miss Rosaline Greene, whose archives are called upon by per sons all over the country. Collect ing this material is a hobby with Miss Greene, who is well known to radio audiences. Treasurers Notice The County Treasurer’s Office will be open for the purpose of re ceiving taxes from the 15th day of September, 1937, to the 15th day of April, 1938 All taxes shall be due and pay; able between the 15th day of Sep tember, 1937, and December 31, 1937. That v/hen taxes charged shall not be paid by December 31, 1937, the County Auditor shall proceed to add a penalty of one per cent for January, and if taxes are not paid on or before February 1, 1938, the County Auditor will proceed to add Two Per Cent for February, and if taxes are not paid on or be fore March 1, 1938, the County Au ditor shall proceed to add 3 per cent for March, and if taxes are not paid on or before April 1, 1938, the County Auditor shall proceed to add 4 per cent up to the 15th of April, 1938, after which time the County Treasurer shall issue exe cutions for all unpaid taxes, plus 7 per cent penalty. The law prescribes that all male citizens between the ages of 21 and 55 years must pay $2.00 commuta tion tax or work six days on the public roads.
