Sunday School Lesson
BY REY. CHARLES E. DUNN
God Gives Laws To a Nation.
Lesson for August 15th.
Exodus 20:1-17
Golden Text: Matt. 22:37, 39.
It is a pity that the legal litera
ture of the Old Testament is gen
erally ignored by Christians. The
tendency has been to exalt the
prophets and, by contrast, to rele
gate the law-givers to such an in
ferior position that they almost
drop out of sight. Such an exag
gerated emphasis on the impor
tance of prophecy is misleading
for it leads to the false assumption
that the laws of Israel are in op
position to its prophetic oracles.
As a matter of fact law and
prophecy belong together as dif
ferent versions of the same divine
revelation, it is well for us then
to study the Hebrew laws with
sympathetic appreciation, for they
have much to teach us today. Un
fortunately our Bible, in its stand
ard versions, presents them in a
confused, unsystematic form, and
the reader is bewildered to find
that many of the laws contradict
one another. Hut if the student will
consult Prof. Kent’s translation
and arrangement of the Old Testa
ment in “The Shorter Bible,” he
will find an admirable compilation
of the statutes dealing with such
topics as property rights, kindness
to men and animals, the duty of
parents to-instruct their children,
and the need of upright dealing
in business transactions.
*”Our lesson is the famous Deca
logue, the most significant and
memorable formulation of Jewish
legislation. According tp Hebrew
tradition Moses was its author
along with all the rest of the laws
in the Pentateuch. We now know
that this elaborate body of legisla
tion represents a long historical
development and so could not, in
its present form, be the creation
of Moses. But it can at least be
said that the fundamental prin
ciples and his insistence upon the
exclusive worship of God as Israel’s
only deity, and on loyal obedience
to His Will furnished the two cor
nerstones upon which the Bible’s
impressive Temple of Law* was
built.
Says Guard Against
Screw Worm Danger
Clemson, Aug. 7.—The true screw
worm was found in South Caro
lina July 28 at Coosawhatchie and
in Berkeley county by representa
tives of the Bureau of Entomology
and Plant Quarantine. This is the
first specimen to be found in South
Carolina during the present year,
though limited numbers occur
across the Savannah river in Geor
gia.
“This finding is made public as
a reminder to livestock owners
that every effort should be made
to reduce cuts on animals at this
season of the year and to apply
pine tar oil to every injury found”,
says W. C. Nettles, extension en-
tomokngist.
“In the screw worm territory
pine tar oil and benzol have been
widely stocked by drug stores.
County farm agents will gladly
demonstrate the use of these ma
terials to any group of farmers
wishing the Information”, Mr. Net
tles states.
“This announcement and sug
gestions are of particular impor
tance to livestock owners in the
Coaital Plains area where screw
worm injury would naturally be
heaviest in an outbreak.”
