Long Cane To
Have Quail Refuge
Greenwood, July 15.—From the
office of the United States Forest
Service, in Greenwood, it was an
nounced today that on August 10,
many thousands of acres of Na
tional Forest land, located in the
Long Cane Ranger District of the
Sumter National Forest, will be
closed to all hunting and fishing,
as well as trespassing, in order to
provide an area for the manage
ment of wildlife and the growing
of quail.
Forest Ranger Wm. P. David
stated that under a cooperative
agreement between the United
States Forest Service and the De
partment of Fish & Game, State of
South Carolina, 6540 acres of land
in the Key Bridge section of the
Long Cane District would be closed
to all hunting and fishing for an
indefinite period. The Key Bridge
section is located approximately
3 miles east of Parksville and 11
miles west of Edgefield. The north
ern edge of the game preserve lies
exactly 25 miles due south of
Greenwood.
The purpose of the wildlife
management area is chiefly to
serve as a breeding place for quail
and as a refuge for this bird. It
will also serve to provide a refuge
for some deer which are now in
the area and for any other species
of wild game. A game warden has
been employed through the co
operation of the State Department
of Fish and Game and placed un
der the supervision of the Forest
Service for safe-guarding and han
dling the 6540 acres which 'have
been dedicated to the propagation
and protection of wild game and
wild life.
' It is expected that by August 10,
all of the outlying boundaries of
this game preserve, as well as the
interior roads, will be posted with
signs which state that hunting,
fishing, and trespassing are pro
hibited. The penalty for violating
the law governing the protection
of this game preserve is $100.00
fine or 30 days imprisonment. Un
der the Federal law, the penalty
is much more severe.
All persons who live near the
game preserve or contemplate be
ing in this section should bear in
mind that dogs and cats are pro
hibited and that all violation will
be prosecuted; everyone should
knew that the carrying or having
in possession of firearms within
the boundary of the wildlife man
agement area, without a special
license, is prohibited and that the
mere possession of a firearm makes
one liable to arrest.
Forest Ranger Wm. P. David, As
sistant Forest Ranger Edwin L.
Giddings, and Superintendent Wad
D. Allen have been appointed by
Governor Johnston as Deputy
State Game Wardens, to serve
without compensation. Ranger
David has also been appointed as
United States Deputy Game War
den. Henry Smith has been appoint-
ined below.
