/ V / / Local Leaders Hold Meeting January 9 A joint meeting of the 4-H club local leaders of Greenwood and McCormick Counties was held at the Court House on January 9th with six leaders and their Agent, Miss Carolyn Avinger from Green wood County, four leaders and Agent, Miss Elnita Harvey of Mc Cormick and Miss Mary Shaw Gil liam, Clothing Specialist from Win- throp College, present. In the absence of the president Mrs. Floyd Cothran, the vice-presi dent, Miss Lettie Mae South pre sided over the meeting. After a short program and business session. Miss Gilliam took charge of the meeting. She gave a very interest ing report of her trip to Chicago, where she chaperoned a group of 4-H club girls, who entered the Na tional 4-H Club Contests there. She then presented the lesson for the month, which was, “Posture in Relationship To Clothing.” Miss Gilliam stressed the effects of proper diet, proper fitting of cloth ing and shoes, proper exercise and proper mental attitude upon pos ture. After the lesson, Miss Gilliam gave several exercises to correct imperfect posture. The meeting adjourned to meet in Greenwood on January 30th at the Oregon Hotel. x Young's H. D. Grand And Petit Club Meets Jurors Are Drawn Hog Cholera In Countv Cholera has broken out in a drove of hogs in the lower part of the county. Dr. W. A. Barnett, Vet erinarian of Greenwood, S. C., has been authorized to work in the county by the State officials. He will be back in the county for this work Saturday, January 23rd. Any one who wishes to have their hogs vaccinated against cholera please notify the County Agent at their earliest convenience. R. D. Suber, County Agent. The Young’s Home Demonstra tion Club met January 13 at the home of Miss Frances Walker with our agent, president and 8 mem bers and one visitor present. The following program was car ried out: Scripture: Mat. 5:1-12—by Miss Ruth Young. Prayer—by all. Watch your P’s and Q’s—by Mis; Frances Walker. Mrs. John Goff resigned as sec retary, and Mrs. J. C. Young was appointed secretary. The meeting was turned over to Miss Harvey, who gave a demon stration on Serving Our Meals. Miss Frances Walker served sandwiches, cake and hot choco late. Mrs. S. L. Honor Roll McCor mick Public Schools, 4th Month, December. -SXX- Thirty-nine Girls Adopt Project In Two Clubs At McCormick High School The McCormick Sixth Grade and the “Betsy Ross” 4-H Clubs were organized September 11th at the McCormick High School Auditori um with twenty-three girls in the Sixth grade Club and sixteen girls in the “Betsy Ross” Club adopting Clothing, Unit I as their project for the year. These clubs met again October 2; and their lesson on “Equipment for Sewing” was discussed by Miss Harvey. The girls were taught the right kind of needles, thread, scis sors, etc., to be used in sewing and were asked to equip a sewing box before the next meeting. The next meeting was held No vember 6th and the lesson for the month was “Cutting Garments by Patterns.” Miss Harvey gave a demonstration on how to use Com mercial Patterns. The first gar ment the girls were asked to make was an apron, which they were asked to make before the December meeting. The McCormick Sixth Grade and the “Betsy Ross” Clubs met De cember 4th in the High School Au ditorium. The lesson for the month was “Standards in Underwear.” The girls learned that the most com fortable and the most serviceable underwear is made from cotton j materials such as seersucker, mus- ! lin, long cloth, Indian head, broad cloth, dimity, prints, percales and washed flour sacks. Carmel News The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Connor of Charles ton will hear with saddened hearts of his sad bereavement in the death of his sweet young wife, which occurred last Thursday night at 8 o’clock at Roper Hospital in Charleston where she had been a patient for several days, suffering with pneumonia. Mrs. Connor has often visited in Mt. Carmel, and her charming personality, winning ways and lovable disposition won for her the love and esteem of everybody. Mr. and Mrs. Connor are parents of 5 sweet little children, and the deepest heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the heartbroken husband in his great sorrow. Mr. Hollis Connor left last Wed nesday for Charleston to be with his brother, Mr. Laurence Connor and family in their sorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter McKinney were called to Charleston Friday by the death of Mrs. Laurence Con nor which occurred at Roper Hos pital about 8 o’clock Thursday night. Miss Gladys Scott of Greenwood spent the past week end here. Mrs. John McCoy of Anderson visited her mother, Mrs. Myrtle Mauldin, one day last week. Dr. and Mrs. S. W. Reid of Mc Cormick were visiting in and around Mt. Carmel one afternoon last week. Mrs. Roy Edmunds and Miss Elsie Edmunds of Augusta spent the past week end with her mother, Mrs. Ida M. Black. Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Russell and Miss Elizabeth Russell of Augusta spent Sabbath with Mrs. J. W. Boyd. Miss Elnita Harvey of McCor mick was a visitor here Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Inman Griffin of Americus returned home Saturday with Mrs Hunter McKinney from Charleston where they had been with their brother and family in their sad bereavement, the death of wife and mother. Mrs. Griffin left Sabbath afternoon to return to her home in Americus, Ga. Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Watson of Mt. Carmel and Mrs. Jennings Dorn of McCormick were among the honor guests at a dinner party given last Wednesday by Mr. and Mrs. John Bunch at their home in Clarks Hill. Always a gracious host ess, Mrs. Bunch was unusually charming on this occasion. After the delicious course dinner was over, an enjoyable trip to the mov ies in Augusta was made, and very much enjoyed. The entire even ing was a very pleasant and happy one to all present. The weather is still warm and disagreeable; the farmers are look ing forward to an early break in order to make a desperate effort to recover some of the losses in 1936. Those who have been sick in this community recently, we are glad to say are all improving. Mr. and Mrs J. B. Mr. Albert Gibert of Willington called to see Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Harmon last Friday afternoon. Mr. Charlie Parnell of Lowndes- ville and Mr. Edd Lee Parnell of Mt. Carmel visited their mother here one night last week. Mr. and Mrs. Manly Willis and children spent a while wiCn Mr. and Mrs. W. W. M. Lindley and family last Sunday afternoon. Mr. W. G. Mitchell was visiting relatives in Iva last week end. Mr. T. P. Bouchillon of Piedmont was a caller in this community Sunday afternoon. Mrs. G. W. Little Milo is spending the week here with his grandmother. — txt Card Of Thanks Four New Buildings Planned For Lander College Will Be Erecte I On Campus As Part Of New Program Greenwood, S. C., Jan. 14.—Four new buildings on the campus are contemplated as part of the $1- 000,000 Lander College Endowment and Development Program, whic> is now being organized on a state wide basis, according to plans an nounced today by Dr. John W- Speake, president. The principal unit of the propos ed new group will be an adminis tration building, housing, in addi tion to administrative offices, an auditorium, classrooms and lab oratories. The present administra tion- building, known as Wiliam Hall, would be converted into dormitory. With Chipley Hall, new est of the present campus struc tures, it would provide living quar ters for as many students as Lan der contemplates enrolling and al so for the faculty members. Other units in the proposed building program are: A library building to house the collection of books recently enlarg ed to meet the numerical require ments of the Southern Association, of Colleges and Secondary Schools- A gymnasium, including swim ming pool. An infirmary, equipped witti- modern hospitalization facilities. New Equipment, especially for the music department, and gener al reconditioning of the present buildings also are contemplated. In explaining the need for the new buildings, Dr. Speake stated:: “This program was decided upon only after careful consideration of the minimum requirements of the college. “With an enrollment of 501 stu dents, the largest in our history; every available inch of floor space on the campus is being utilized. We have, in fact, outgrown oar plant and it has been necessary to go beyond the campus to house students and faculty. Last year it was necessary to acquire two pri vate residences and convert then into dormitory quarters.” The campus proper at Lander - covers an area of seventy-fiae acres, providing ample space for new construction. A bare field 5a 1904, when the institution was moved from Williamston to Green wood, the tract now contains foar arge brick buildings in a beautifal- iy landscaped setting.
